Adult Tricycle Product

Overview

An adult tricycle is a three-wheeled people mover designed for stability, cargo capacity, and leisurely pace. Unlike a bicycle, it needs no balance—three contact points make it as stable as a chair. The step-through or low-bar frame permits mounting and dismounting without lifting a leg over the top tube, and the wide front basket holds groceries, mail, or light equipment.

The Frame Assembly is a low-slung steel tube chassis with one front wheel for steerage and two rear wheels for stability. Propulsion comes via foot pedals that drive a chain to a differential hub, allowing both rear wheels to turn at different speeds in corners. The Seat Assembly is wide and sprung for all-day comfort, and the front basket carries cargo without affecting steering geometry.

The dual-brake system combines a sealed rear hub brake for weather resistance with a front rim calliper for modulated stopping. The differential axle is the defining feature: it isolates the outside wheel from the inside wheel during turns, eliminating the binding and scrubbing that would occur if both wheels were rigidly locked.

How it works

Power input starts at the pedal drivetrain. The rider pushes flat or cage-style pedals mounted on cranks 165–170 mm long. The cranks are bolted to a 1-inch hollow steel spindle with sealed bearing cartridges. Rotation of the cranks drives a Chainring (typically 38–48 teeth for low-speed, high-torque pedalling) which meshes with a Drive Chain running to the rear hub.

The rear Rear Axle Assembly is the tricycle's heart. A sealed planetary differential sits at the axle centerline, internally routing torque to the left and right wheel shafts. During straight riding, both wheels turn at the same speed. In a corner, the differential automatically transfers more torque to the outside wheel (which must travel a longer arc) and less to the inside wheel, eliminating the scrubbing and resistance that would arise from forcing both wheels through the same arc.

The Sprocket Cassette (7–8 speeds, 14–28 tooth range) is bolted to the right axle half. A ratchet freewheel allows the rider to coast when feet are off the pedals. Single-speed tricycles omit the cassette and derailleur entirely, simplifying maintenance at the cost of gear flexibility.

Steering is direct: the rider pulls the Handlebar left or right, rotating the Fork Stem and fork, which pivots the front wheel. The low-sweep handlebar and wide geometry provide a relaxed, upright posture. The Front Basket mounts forward on the fork, low and centred, so cargo weight does not significantly alter steering feel.

Braking divides the workload: the rear hub drum brake, sealed against weather, supplies the majority of stopping force (~70%), while the front rim calliper provides modulation and helps prevent pitching forward on steep hills. The rider operates two independent hand levers, one for each brake, allowing progressive control. An optional parking brake lock ratchets the rear brake lever, holding the tricycle on a slope without constant hand pressure.

The Seat Assembly is wide (280 mm) and suspended on coil or elastomer springs to absorb bumps. The seat post allows vertical height adjustment (typically 540–700 mm) so riders of different inseams can reach the pedals comfortably. The post uses a quick-release clamp for rapid seat swapping if multiple riders share the tricycle.

Cargo and variants

Front-basket tricycles are the standard leisure and utility variant. Rear-cargo versions place a larger rack behind the seat for heavier loads (20–30 kg). Some designs feature dual rear baskets, one on each side, to balance asymmetric loads. Delivery or mail-carrier tricycles often fit a large box body (30–50 L) replacing the simple basket, with weatherproofing and internal dividers.

Electric-assist variants (e-trikes) add a rear hub motor and lithium battery, allowing hill climbing and higher speeds without heavy pedalling. The differential remains unchanged, so the added power simply supplements foot power via a controller and pedal-assist sensor.

Performance-oriented versions may upgrade to sealed cartridge bearings throughout, narrower racing tyres, and three-speed or seven-speed cassettes for better gear spacing. Cargo tricycles destined for long service lives often specify stainless or galvanized fasteners to resist road salt and rain exposure.
