Flame Weeder Product
Overview
A flame weeder kills plants by rapid thermal shock—exposing cell contents to 1700 °C heat for 1–2 seconds ruptures cell walls. The operator carries a Tank Carrier Frame backpack frame supporting a Propane Tank (propane cylinder). A Propane Hose Assembly runs from the tank through the Regulator Assembly to the handheld Handle Control Tube, which houses the Valve Body on/off control and Spark Electrode igniter. At the tip, the Burner Head Assembly atomizes and ignites propane, producing a blue flame 15–30 cm long. No chemicals are applied; residue is just ash.
Flame weeding is effective on gravel, pavement cracks, and between hardscape—areas where mechanical tools or herbicides are risky or banned. It works best on annual weeds (dandelions, clover) and young perennial growth, but established deep-rooted perennials may regrow.
How it works
The Cylinder Valve on the Propane Tank is always open, feeding propane to the Regulator Assembly. Inside the regulator, the First Stage Spring steps down tank pressure (40–50 bar) to roughly 10 bar. A second-stage Second Stage Spring then regulates to the burner setpoint (5–8 bar), maintaining constant outlet pressure as the tank empties.
Regulated propane flows through the Propane Hose Assembly to the Valve Body in the torch handle. When the user presses the Trigger/Plunger trigger, a needle or ball valve opens, allowing propane to flow to the Burner Nozzle. Simultaneously, the trigger contact closes an electrical path, energizing a Spark Generator—typically a piezoelectric element pressed by a spring and released rapidly by the valve's mechanical action. The spark jumps at the Spark Electrode, igniting propane streaming from the Torch Tip. The combustion flame extends 15–30 cm and is concentrated by a Flame Spreader & Reflector ring.
The operator aims the flame at the base of target weeds and holds for 1–2 seconds per plant. The rapid heat causes water inside weed cells to flash-boil, rupturing tissue. Perennial weeds with deep taproots may recover if not attacked at a vulnerable growth stage. The backpack Shoulder Strap and Waist Belt distribute the 7–12 kg loaded weight across the operator's shoulders and hips.
