Keg Filling Line Product
Overview
A keg filling line is a semi- or fully automated system that washes, fills, carbonates, and quality-checks kegs in a continuous flow. The system integrates a Infeed Conveyor that indexes kegs through successive stations: a Keg Washer for sanitation, a Fill Head Assembly for product dispensing, a Carbonation System stage for carbonation, and a Checkweigher for volume verification. A Control System orchestrates the entire process via PLC logic and operator interface.
How it works
Empty kegs are manually loaded onto the Infeed Conveyor or fed from an upstream line. The Drive Motor moves kegs at a programmable speed, typically one keg every 30–90 seconds depending on line throughput target and dwell time required at each station.
At the washer station, the keg is clamped and the Wash Pump circulates a three-stage chemical wash: hot caustic solution (dissolved in water from the Wash Heater) penetrates organic soils, then an acid or oxidizer removes mineral deposits, and finally hot water rinses away all chemicals. The Wash Solenoid switches between these solutions under PLC control. The Spray Head impacts both the internal and external surfaces with precision spray balls.
After wash, the keg moves to the fill station. The Fill Probe seats on the keg valve. The Fill Pump is a precise positive-displacement pump that meters out a calibrated volume, monitored by the Volume Meter. The Counter-Pressure Valve maintains back-pressure in the keg (typically 10–15 psi) to minimize foam and CO2 escape. The Fill Solenoid Valve gates the pump flow, opening only for the programmed fill duration.
Carbonation occurs either during fill (by opening the CO2 Solenoid to inject CO2 gas) or post-fill by tumbling the sealed keg. The CO2 Regulator steps down cylinder pressure (800+ psi) to working pressure (15–30 psi), allowing precise gas metering. The target carbonation level (e.g., 2.5 volumes CO2) is set in the Control System.
At the checkweigher, the filled keg rests on the Weigh Platform, which sits atop the Load Cell. The weight is measured to ±100 g and displayed on the Weight Display. If the weight falls within the acceptable window (e.g., 50.5–50.7 L for a 50 L keg), the Weigh Solenoid routes the keg to the accept lane. If outside tolerance, it is diverted for manual inspection or correction.
Optionally, the Label/Print Module station applies a lot code, production date, or QR code via the Printer Head, which may be thermal inkjet or thermal transfer.
The PLC coordinates all solenoid timings, pump speed, and conveyor motion. The HMI Panel allows operators to enter fill volume, carbonation target, and line speed. The PLC reads the Speed Sensor to synchronize fill duration with line indexing, ensuring consistent results. If any sensor fails, the Fault Relay de-energizes the fill solenoid immediately.
Key features
- Integrated workflow: Single system performs wash, fill, and verify—no manual transfers between stations.
- High accuracy: Load-cell checkweighing ensures ±100 mL fill accuracy, preventing under- or overfill claims.
- Modular: Keg size changeover is done via software setpoints and mechanical adapter plates; no major retooling.
- Carbonation control: Adjustable CO2 injection rate and timing produce consistent carbonation across batch.
- Sanitation: CIP wash protocol removes pathogens and residual beer, critical for product safety.
- Scalability: Speed can be increased from 40 to 120 kegs/hour by adjusting conveyor speed and fill pump displacement.
