Oilseed Expeller Press Product

Overview

An oilseed expeller is a mechanical extraction press that separates crude oil from seeds through continuous screw compression. The machine forces seeds through a hardened barrel cage as an internal auger rotates at low speed, building pressure until the compressed mass yields oil through perforations. The cake—the residual solids—exits dry at the tail, while oil drains through a sloped collection pan into storage.

Expellers are used worldwide for cottonseed, sunflower, rapeseed, groundnut, and palm kernel processing. They are entirely mechanical, requiring no chemical solvents and producing cold-pressed oil valuable in premium markets. Extraction efficiency depends on seed moisture (optimum 8–12%), screw condition, and cage temperature control.

How it works

Seeds enter the Feeder Assembly hopper, where a vibrator meters them into the screw at a constant rate. The Auger Shaft rotates inside the Press Cage, progressively reducing the available volume and compressing the seed slurry. As material moves along the shaft, the auger flights—having variable pitch—increase compression and oil leakage through the cage perforations.

The Choke Ring at the discharge end acts as a restriction that maintains back pressure. Too much restriction causes heat and motor overload; too little allows uncompressed seed through. Operators adjust the choke by inserting shims or changing the ring thickness.

Oil forced through the cage walls falls into the Oil Collection System pan below and drains through a wedge-wire filter that removes seed fragments and suspended fines. The Discharge Auger immediately removes hot cake, which may be recycled to solvent extraction or dried for animal feed.

Power transmission

The Motor and Drive is a three-phase motor (7.5–15 kW for commercial units) mounted on the base frame. Power passes through a Gearbox Assembly containing helical gears in a 50:1 reduction, lowering motor speed from 1450 rpm to the optimal 30 rpm screw rotational speed. The final drive shaft couples to the screw via a flexible joint that absorbs start-up shock.

Thermal management

Oil viscosity is highly temperature-dependent. Cold oil (below 30°C) resists flow, requiring higher pressure and wasting motor energy. Hot oil (above 85°C) becomes thin and less recoverable, as it seeps past seals and increases cake residual oil. The Control and Monitoring include a Temperature Sensor probe that measures discharge temperature and alerts the operator to either slow feed rate (if too hot) or preheat incoming seed (if too cold).

Cage and construction

The Press Cage is a series of hardened steel rings assembled around the screw shaft, each with slots or perforations sized to allow oil but not seed particles. The cage is segmented so that worn sections can be replaced without rebuilding the whole press. A new cage may cost 20–30% of the expeller's purchase price but lasts 5–10 years under typical operation.

The Support Frame is welded structural steel angle iron, often with stainless sheet guards for food-safety certification. All wetted parts in contact with oil are stainless or hardened steel.

Advantages and limitations

Mechanical expellers produce virgin oil with no chemical additives, supporting premium positioning in retail markets. They require minimal infrastructure—just a three-phase power connection and drainage. Operating cost is lower than solvent extraction.

However, extraction efficiency (35–50% oil recovery) is inferior to solvent extraction (98%+ recovery). The residual oil cost in the cake may render the expeller uneconomical for very low-value seeds. In industrial oilseed crushing, expellers are often paired with a downstream Solvent Extractor that processes the cake to recover remaining oil.
