Case Packer Product

Overview

A case packer (also called a case erector or case packing robot) is a production system that erects cases from flat blanks, groups individual products into the required packaging pattern, loads the group into the case, and seals the case for shipment. It combines mechanical indexing with robotic pick-and-place capability and is widely used in beverage, pharmaceutical, and consumer goods manufacturing.

The machine performs four main operations in sequence: case erection, product grouping, robotic loading, and case sealing. Depending on the product size and case geometry, typical speeds range from 10 to 50 cases per minute. Optional vision-guided placement and configurable grippers allow fast changeover between product families.

How it works

The Case Magazine holds flat case blanks fed one at a time via the Case Separator to the Case Erector. The Erector Servo activates the Erector Cam and Erector Grippers to fold the flat case into a 3D box. The Bottom Glue Head applies hot-melt adhesive to seal the bottom flaps.

The erected empty case is indexed onto an internal accumulator that feeds the Grouping System. Individual products arrive on the Grouping Conveyor, which is controlled by the Grouping Motor. The Product Pushers align the products into rows (e.g., 4×6 for a 24-unit case), and the Pattern Sensor verifies that the grouping pattern is complete before the group moves forward.

The grouped products are then picked by the Pick and Place Arm, a multi-axis cartesian gantry or articulated robot. The Arm Structure carries three servo axes: the Arm X Servo (width), Arm Y Servo (depth), and Arm Z Servo (lift). The Arm Gripper uses the Suction Cups to vacuum-grip the product group. The Arm Vision camera confirms product presence and position before the arm moves.

The arm lowers the product group into the empty case, then retracts. The case indexes to the Case Sealer, where the Sealer Head applies top flaps closure with either reinforced tape from the Tape Dispenser or hot-melt adhesive via the Sealer Nozzle. The Sealer Pressure Wheel apply firm contact to ensure a strong seal.

The sealed case is discharged onto the Discharge Conveyor, driven by the Discharge Motor and Discharge Belt.

All mechanical station indexing is synchronised by the Drive System, which comprises the Main Motor, Main Gearbox, and Main Shaft carrying Shaft Sprockets or cams.

The Control System houses the Control Cabinet with the PLC, servo drives, and power supplies. The HMI Interface allows operators to select format, set speed, and monitor fault logs. The Safety Interface ensures E-Stop Button authority and guards via Safety Gates.

The Lubrication System maintains continuous oil circulation to the Main Gearbox and drive bearings via the Lube Pump, Lube Filter, and Lube Manifold.

Flexibility and changeover

Format changeover involves swapping the Erector Cam, adjusting the Product Pusher spacing, and reconfiguring the Arm Gripper or attaching a different suction-cup pattern. Stored recipes in the HMI Interface can reduce changeover time to 20–40 minutes for formats within a size family. Configurable grippers allow same-day runs of different product sizes without major mechanical changes.
