Overview
A bare PCB is the rigid board that mechanically holds and electrically connects every component on an electronic assembly — before any parts are soldered to it. In this graph it is the common substrate beneath every control board, BMS, inverter logic board, and ECU.
Construction
The core is FR-4, woven fibreglass cloth impregnated with epoxy resin and clad with copper foil. Traces are etched from that copper to form the wiring; multilayer boards stack several copper layers separated by resin prepreg, with plated vias drilling vertical connections between them. A solder mask (the green coating) insulates everything except the pads, and a silkscreen prints labels. Exposed pads get a surface finish — ENIG (gold over nickel), HASL (tin-lead/tin), or OSP — to stay solderable.
Manufacturing and role
Boards are made by laminating the layers, drilling, electroless-then-electrolytic copper plating the holes, imaging and etching the pattern, applying mask and silkscreen, and routing to shape. A higher layer count buys more routing density and better power/ground planes for fast or noisy circuits. On its own the bare board does nothing; it becomes a working assembly only when the SMD Passive (R/C/L), Microcontroller, connectors, and power devices are placed and reflow-soldered onto it — which is why those parts sit beside it in every electronics BOM here.
