Bowling Pinsetter Product

Overview

Until 1952 every bowling lane employed a pin boy. The automatic pinsetter — AMF's 82-30 first, Brunswick's A-2 soon after, and the Brunswick GS-series as the modern reference design — replaced him with roughly a tonne of cams, belts, and conveyors that perform the same four jobs every frame: clear the deck, recover the pins, sort them, and set a fresh rack. A complete cycle — ball strikes, Sweep clears, Deck Table sets — takes under ten seconds, and the Ball Return has the ball back at the bowler before the pins are even sorted.

The cycle

A ball crossing the Ball Detect Sensor sensor starts the sequence. The Sweep Board drops to guard position, protecting the machine from a fast second ball. The Machine Controller then reads the deck — on modern machines an CMOS Image Sensor camera scores standing pins in one frame — and chooses one of two table actions.

After a first ball with pins standing, the Table Lift lowers the Table Frame, each Pin Gripper closes on a standing pin's neck via its Scissor Link, the table lifts the survivors clear, the sweep rakes the deadwood into the pit, and the table sets the survivors back on their spots. After a strike or a second ball, the grippers stay open: the sweep clears everything and the table instead releases ten fresh pins from the Spotting Cup cells, planting a new rack on the 12-inch triangle.

The sweep's motion comes from the Sweep Linkage crank driven by the Main Motor; its Sweep Bumper face absorbs balls thrown into a lowered guard, a daily event in a busy house.

Recovering and sorting pins

Everything raked into the pit lands on the Pit Conveyor. The ball, far heavier than any pin, trips the Ball Door and exits sideways to the return; pins continue rearward to the Elevator Wheel, a slowly rotating wheel whose Pin Cradle pockets lift one pin each from pit level to the top of the machine. Pins arrive in random orientation, so the Orientation Guide cams turn every pin base-first on the way up — pins are bottom-heavy, and the geometry exploits that asymmetry rather than sensing it.

At the top, the Distributor takes over: the Turret or a Distributor Belt shuttle routes each pin to the next empty Pin Station, stepped by the Indexing Cam. When all ten stations hold a pin, the Pin-Full Switch tells the controller a complete rack is staged — the machine always works one rack ahead, which is how it sets ten pins seconds after a strike. About twenty pins circulate per lane so the deck set and the staged set never wait on each other.

Ball return

The Accelerator Wheel pair grips the ball leaving the pit door and fires it down the Return Track at 6-8 m/s; shared between a lane pair, the return ends in a Ball Lift that raises the ball into the rack. The accelerator has its own Accelerator Motor and Drive Belt, because it runs on a different duty cycle from the setting machinery.

Control and sensing

Early pinsetters were sequenced entirely by cams and microswitches; modern ones keep the cams for motion but hand sequencing to the Control Chassis, an Microcontroller-based controller reading Hall Sensor cycle-position pickups and a shaft Encoder, driving the three motors through Relay contactors. The same camera that triggers respot logic feeds pinfall counts to the front-of-house scoring system, which is why automatic scoring and the pinsetter are one integrated machine in a modern centre. Interlock Switch guards on every service panel kill the drives when opened — pinsetter mechanics work inside a machine that combines a tonne of moving steel with stored spring energy, and the back end of a bowling centre is an industrial space in every regulatory sense.

The frame

All of it hangs on the Machine Frame: two Side Frame weldments bolted to the lane's kickback walls, tied by Cross Member beams that carry the shafts, with Guard Panel covers over the belt runs and a Masking Curtain hiding the whole apparatus from the approach — the reason most bowlers have never seen the machine that serves them every frame.
