Blister Packaging Machine Product

Overview

A rotary blister packaging machine forms thermoplastic blisters (domed pockets) from film, fills them with products, seals them to printed backing cards, and cuts out finished packs. It is widely used for pharmaceuticals, vitamins, hardware, electronics, and other small items that benefit from protective, tamper-evident packaging.

The machine uses a large rotating carousel (turret) with 6–24 stations, each performing one operation: forming, product loading, sealing, perforating, and punching. This intermittent, station-based approach allows high throughput (40–250 packs/min) with strong control over process parameters.

How it works

The Main Turret rotates intermittently, driven by the Drive System. The main Main Motor and Main Gearbox rotate the Main Shaft, which carries the Indexing Cam. The cam stops the turret at each station position, allowing operations to complete before advancing.

At the Forming Station, film from the Film Carousel is heated by the Forming Heater and placed over a Forming Die with precision cavities. The Vacuum Pump evacuates air between the softened film and the die, vacuum-forming the film into blisters. The Forming Servo controls vacuum pressure and dwell time.

Products are supplied by the Product Infeed System system. The Vibratory Feed Bowl (a vibratory feeder) orients products and feeds them into the Feed Track, which advances them single-file. The Feed Motor vibrates the track, and the Feed Sensor detects when a product is properly seated in a blister cavity.

At the Sealing Station, a Backing Card Feeder (the Card Feeder Motor advancing cards from the Card Hopper) positions a printed backing card over the blister. The Sealing Platen, heated by Heating Elements, presses down with force controlled by the Sealing Servo. The Sealing Temperature Sensor ensures optimal seal temperature is maintained via the Heating Control System system.

The sealed blister-card assembly then moves to the Perforating Station, where the Perforation Tool (pneumatic or servo-driven) creates perforations around the blister edge, facilitating consumer opening. The Perforation Servo actuates the tool.

At the Punching Station, the Cutting Die severs the individual pack from the web, with the Punch Servo providing the cutting force. Waste film and scrap drop into the Scrap Chute.

Finally, at the Discharge Station, the Ejection Arm pushes the finished pack onto the Discharge Conveyor, driven by the Discharge Motor.

The Control System sequences all operations via the Control Cabinet PLC. The HMI Panel allows operators to select blister-size recipes, set temperatures, and monitor production. The Safety Module provides the E-Stop Button and interlocks.

Material options and customisation

Film material choice (PVC, PETG, PLA, PS, Nylon) depends on product requirements:

  • PVC: Low cost, good clarity and formability, common in pharmaceuticals.
  • PETG: Higher strength and clarity, better for heavy items.
  • PLA: Biodegradable option for eco-conscious applications.

Blister depth, cavity shape, and perforating pattern are all tooling-specific and set by the Forming Die. Format changes require new die set and backing card design—typically 4–8 hours for skilled technicians.

Speeds of 40–250 packs/min depend on cavity count (more stations = faster output), dwell time per station, and product complexity. Pharmaceutical grade machines achieve >99.5% pack integrity through redundant sealing verification.
