Intercom Beltpack Product

Overview

A production intercom beltpack is the tactical radio of film, television, and live event crews. A small transceiver worn on the belt connects the operator to a headset with microphone, allowing push-to-talk communication with other crew members across the set. In a multi-camera live broadcast, the assistant camera operator keeps in contact with the focus puller; a boom operator coordinates with the sound engineer; floor managers cue camera movements to robotic pedestals. All of this happens silently, in real time, on encrypted duplex channels that keep operations coordinated without adding floor noise.

Wired vs. wireless

Wired beltpacks connect to a central intercom base station via a multi-pair shielded cable, offering reliable, low-latency communication with no drop-outs and unlimited range (within cable length). Each pack has a fixed channel assignment at the base.

Wireless beltpacks are self-contained RF transceivers operating in shared spectrum (UHF or 2.4 GHz). They offer mobility but require frequency coordination to avoid conflicts and typically have less range than wired. Modern wireless packs use spread-spectrum techniques (FHSS or DSSS) for interference rejection and encryption for security.

Duplex operation

The push-to-talk button on the pack activates the microphone and disables the speaker to prevent feedback. Full-duplex systems allow simultaneous talk and listen (like a phone call), while half-duplex mimics traditional radio (only one person speaks at a time per channel). Most intercom systems support both, depending on configuration.

The control MCU manages the button presses, calls the selected channel, and routes audio between the headset jack and the RF transceiver. A small LED indicator on the PTT button flashes when incoming traffic arrives on the monitored channel.

Audio path

A MEMS microphone on the headset boom captures the operator's voice. A preamplifier boosts the signal to line level, with high-pass filtering removing low-frequency rumble. The signal passes through an audio codec IC that compresses or encodes the voice for transmission (in digital systems) or feeds an RF modulator (in analog UHF systems).

On receive, the audio path reverses: the transceiver demodulates or decodes incoming traffic and sends it to the headset amplifier, which drives the headset speaker. A volume control lets the operator adjust receive level.

Power and battery management

A rechargeable Li-ion cell powers the pack. A battery management system protects against over-charge and over-discharge, extending cell life. The pack typically offers 8–12 hours of talk time on a single charge. High-cycle batteries are common; some crews swap charged packs every 4 hours during long productions.

Wireless packs often include a dock-charging cradle; the operator sets the pack down at base camp and it tops up between scenes. Wired packs draw power from the base station via the cable, so battery life is unlimited.

Intercom discipline

Professional intercom operation is an art. Channels are organized by role (camera, focus, sound, floor management, etc.) or by scene. Operators must speak clearly and briefly—long-winded radio traffic bogs down the crew. Many production coordinators enforce "radio discipline": only speak when necessary, use standard phrases ("Rolling," "Cut," "Check focus"), and always acknowledge ("Copy"). Headsets are designed for durability: reinforced boom arms, replaceable ear cups, and shock-absorption so a dropped pack or tangled cable doesn't sever the critical link to your team.
