Studio Jib Arm Product

Overview

A studio jib arm is a remote-controlled crane allowing operators to frame dynamic shots in broadcast or film production. The device combines mechanical engineering and hydraulic damping to deliver smooth camera motion with intuitive control. Mounted on a rolling base with pneumatic casters, it serves in studios where camera rigs must reach over obstacles, achieve crane shots, or make dramatic moves while keeping operators safe and predictable.

The fundamental design is a seesaw: the boom extends horizontally with the camera mounted on the short end, and a carriage of stacked weights slides along the boom to achieve balance regardless of the payload. A control bar articulates via servo motors to command pan and tilt motion, while hydraulic dampers ensure smooth motion curves and prevent jerk. The rolling base with its steering ring allows an operator to push the entire crane across the set floor.

How it works

The boom tube is supported by a single pivot bearing, which is the mechanical fulcrum. The camera-end of the boom (5 inches in front of the pivot) holds a payload; the opposite, longer end (nearly 3 meters behind the pivot) carries the movable counterweight carriage. The carriage rides on twin rails and can slide forward or backward to adjust the balance point. As the operator changes camera load or adjusts composition, they roll the carriage to maintain neutral balance—a heavy camera might slide the weights further back, a light camera pushes them forward. A load cell beneath the carriage reports the current balance to the control electronics.

Horizontal and vertical camera movement come from two brushless DC servo motors connected to the boom via harmonic drives (50:1 reduction) that command minimal backlash. These motors drive pan and tilt linkages that mechanically couple to the control bar—the operator's interface. Pull the bar forward to pan the camera left/right; rotate it to tilt up/down. The motion controller reads the joystick position and sends PWM signals to the servo amplifiers, which meter power to the motors.

Hydraulic cartridges filled with food-grade mineral oil damp both pan and tilt motion. These contain a proportional valve that throttles oil flow through a fixed orifice—the operator can adjust the orifice size via a potentiometer on the control panel. Tighter orifice = slower, heavier motion; looser = snappier response. This damping is the signature feel of a jib arm: if you release the control bar, the camera does not snap to a stop but coasts to a gentle halt, making long tracking shots look cinematic.

The pedestal base is a three-point stand for stability. Three pneumatic wheels on swivel mounts let the entire arm roll across the studio floor. The steering ring is a horizontal grip that rotates the front casters, allowing push-to-steer operation: grip and turn the ring, the casters follow, and the arm moves. Each wheel has a foot brake for locking position during a shot.

Power and control

The control electronics live in a control box mounted on the base, powered by a 24 VDC supply. The operator connects a joystick or pendant with two analog axes (pan and tilt) and buttons for mode selection and load-cell zeroing. Video and audio cables route up through the spiral wrap running along the boom to the camera head interface, where they flex with the boom as it moves.

Balancing a jib arm is an art. Before each shot, the operator slides the counterweight carriage until the boom stays level when released—zero load at the bearing. During production, if the camera load or shot composition changes, they adjust the carriage by a few centimeters. The load cell provides digital feedback, so modern control systems can alert the operator if balance drifts beyond safe margins. A properly balanced jib arm feels effortless to move; an out-of-balance arm strains the servos and creates jerky motion.
