Overview
A wire EDM machine cuts hardened steel, carbide, titanium and other conductive metals with a continuously moving brass wire that never touches the work. Because cutting is done by electrical sparks rather than mechanical force, the machine produces complex profiles, sharp internal corners and fine details in material too hard to mill — punch-and-die sets, extrusion dies, gears and aerospace fixtures. There are no cutting forces to deflect a thin part, and the kerf is only slightly wider than the wire, so very little stock is lost.
The structural loop is built on the Machine Frame, a granite-and-cast-iron assembly that holds geometry stable as the shop warms and cools. The workpiece rides on the X-Y Work Table, a cross-slide table driven by servo motors through ballscrews and read by glass scales for sub-micron feedback. Above it, the U-V Taper Head shifts the upper wire guide independently in U and V so the wire can lean, cutting tapers and ruled surfaces where the top and bottom profiles differ.
How it works
Cutting is spark erosion. The Pulse Power Generator switches thousands of short, high-current pulses per second across the gap between the wire and the part. Each pulse ionizes the dielectric, strikes a spark that melts and vaporizes a tiny crater of metal, then collapses so the next pulse can fire. Material is removed one microscopic crater at a time, which is why surface finish and accuracy are so good.
Fresh wire is essential because each spark also erodes the electrode. The Wire Transport System pays new brass wire off a supply spool, holds it under constant tension, runs it through the cut, and chops the spent wire into the waste bin — the wire is used once and discarded. The Wire Guide System locates that wire to the micron with diamond dies just above and below the part, while flushing nozzles drive dielectric into the kerf to clear debris.
The gap is flooded by the Dielectric System. Deionized water is the dielectric: it insulates the gap until a pulse fires, then flushes away the eroded particles and cools both wire and work. The water is filtered, passed through an ion-exchange deionizer to hold its conductivity in the working band, and chilled to keep dimensions stable. The whole cut runs submerged inside the Work Tank to suppress noise and improve flushing.
Coordinating all of it is the CNC Control System, which interpolates the programmed path, commands the four servo drives, and continuously adapts pulse energy and feed rate to keep the gap voltage in its sweet spot — backing off when flushing is poor and pushing harder when the cut is clean. When the wire breaks or a new pocket must be started, the Automatic Wire Threader re-threads it through the part unattended, letting the machine run long jobs through the night.
