Commercial Tumble Dryer Product
Overview
The commercial tumble dryer is the standard batch drying machine in industrial laundries, hospitals, hotels, and textile care facilities. It combines the gentle tumbling action of domestic dryers with the heating capacity and automation of industrial equipment, drying 45 kg loads in 30–50 minutes while monitoring moisture content electronically.
The machine comprises a large perforated rotating drum mounted horizontally inside an insulated steel cabinet. A gas burner or steam coil heats air to 70–90°C, which is forced through the rotating drum via a centrifugal fan in continuous circulation. Moisture-laden exhaust air exits through a lint filter to the exterior.
The PLC control system monitors exhaust air humidity and fabric temperature, automatically advancing through preset drying stages (high heat, cooling, anti-wrinkle tumble). The machine cuts heat when the humidity sensor detects the target dryness level, saving energy and reducing fabric wear.
Typical throughput is 8–12 loads per 8-hour shift, equivalent to 360–540 kg dry weight per day per dryer, making it the economic standard for most commercial laundries.
How It Works
An operator loads damp fabric from the wash line into the rotating drum and closes the front door. The safety latch interlock signals the PLC that the door is secure.
The operator selects a cycle on the 7-inch HMI display: typically "Cottons Heavy" (90°C, 40 min), "Synthetics" (70°C, 25 min), or "Delicates" (60°C, 15 min). The PLC validates the selection and begins the main heat phase.
The 7.5 kW drive motor accelerates the drum to the preset speed (typically 60 rpm for cottons, 40 rpm for synthetics) via the variable frequency drive. Simultaneously, the gas burner ignites at full power (400 kW), heating air in the heat chamber to setpoint temperature (90°C for heavy cottons).
The centrifugal blower (2.2 kW motor) draws air from the inlet port, passes it through the heated chamber, and forces it axially through the drum via the internal ducting. Air enters the drum through a stationary inlet, circulates around the rotating load, exits through the perforations, and is drawn out via the outlet path back to the blower inlet, creating a closed-loop recirculation.
Inside the drum, the load tumbles as the baffle blades lift and drop fabric continuously. Hot air flows through the fabric, evaporating moisture. The moist exhaust air is drawn out through the lint filter, which traps fibers, and exits via the external ductwork to the rooftop.
The humidity sensor on the exhaust stream continuously measures relative humidity. For heavy cottons, the PLC maintains high heat until RH falls below 8%. Once this threshold is reached, the burner shuts off and the drum continues tumbling at lower speed (20 rpm) with ambient-temperature air circulation for 5 minutes (cooling phase), preventing thermal shock to fibers.
Finally, the PLC enters anti-wrinkle mode: the drum rotates intermittently (5 seconds on, 10 seconds off) at 20 rpm for 10 minutes, allowing cooling and mechanical moisture release. This phase consumes minimal energy and prevents static cling and wrinkles that develop if hot fabric sits stationary.
At cycle end, the PLC signals a completion alarm (audible beep), the drum stops, and the door unlock button becomes active. The operator removes the dried, warm load and places it on a cart for transport to the folding machine or manual folding area.
Temperature and Airflow Control
The atmospheric gas burner is a simple design: gas and air mix at the burner port, ignite at the pilot light, and burn in an open flame within the heat chamber. Hot combustion gases radiate heat to a radiator surface in the airstream. Combustion gases exit via a separate flue to atmosphere (not into the dryer air stream, per safety codes).
The exit air thermocouple senses the air temperature downstream of the heat exchanger. The PLC maintains this temperature at the setpoint (70–90°C) by modulating gas supply via a solenoid gas valve. Proportional burner control (throttling gas) is not available on this model; instead, burner cycles on/off via the solenoid to maintain ±5°C setpoint. Cycling frequency is typically 10–30 seconds on, 10–30 seconds off depending on load and setpoint.
The blower is constant-speed (2.2 kW motor always running during drying), delivering 2000 m³/hr airflow at 500 Pa static pressure against ductwork and lint filter resistance. As lint accumulates on the filter screen, air resistance increases. The differential pressure switch monitors ductwork pressure; if lint blockage causes pressure to exceed 100 Pa above normal, the switch signals a fault, and the PLC displays "Clean Lint Filter" on the display.
The insulated cabinet (50 mm mineral wool) keeps the external surface below 50°C for operator safety. Heat loss is approximately 8–10 kW during full-heat operation, so 400 kW burner input yields approximately 390 kW effective heat to drying.
Moisture Sensing and Cycle End
The capacitive humidity sensor on the exhaust stream provides real-time feedback of fabric dryness. For a 45 kg load of standard weight cotton, the sensor reading begins around 80% RH (saturated with moisture) and drops logarithmically as the cycle progresses, reaching 8% RH after 35–40 minutes at 90°C.
The PLC firmware allows operators to set the "dry point" target: 8% RH for storage (low-energy drying), 12% RH for immediate use (slight moisture retained for comfort), or 20% RH for delicate items (minimal thermal damage). When actual humidity falls below setpoint, the PLC cuts heat and enters cooling and anti-wrinkle phases.
The outlet temperature probe provides redundant feedback: it confirms that the fabric has reached equilibrium temperature (within 10°C of air temperature), indicating that drying is substantially complete. If the humidity sensor fails, the PLC can fallback to time-based drying (e.g., "run for 40 minutes") or temperature-based (e.g., "cycle until outlet air equals inlet air").
This moisture-sensing strategy reduces over-drying by 15–20% compared to fixed-time drying, saving energy and extending fabric life. A lightly-soiled towel may dry in 20 minutes; a wet bathrobe in the same machine may require 45 minutes—the sensor automatically adjusts rather than requiring operator guesswork.
Construction and Durability
The drum is stainless steel (AISI 304) with perforations spaced to allow air passage while retaining fibers. The internal baffle system consists of 8–12 curved blades welded to the drum interior, lifting and tumbling fabric with minimal snagging. The front and rear bearings are sealed roller bearings rated 100 rpm continuous, supporting radial and axial loads from the 45 kg fabric mass.
The labyrinth seal is a multi-stage design: rotating seal ring, stationary lip, and labyrinth passages that allow air circulation while excluding lint from bearing cavities. Lint that escapes the primary lint trap is captured here rather than contaminating bearings.
The cabinet frame is welded mild steel ASTM A36 with 50 mm mineral wool insulation. External temperature is maintained below 50°C even during high-heat drying. The door is stainless steel with a silicone gasket, sealed against the cabinet lip when the three-point latch is engaged. The safety interlock is a normally-open microswitch that only allows motor start when the latch is fully closed.
The VFD soft-start limits inrush current from the 7.5 kW motor to 150% rated, extending motor and contact life. The gas valve solenoid is energized only during heat phases; pilot light burners (manual, not electric) have been phased out in favor of piezo ignition systems with automatic relighting if flame is lost.
Maintenance Schedule
Every 40 hours: Clean lint filter in running water. Every 500 hours: Inspect drum bearings for play; replace seals if dripping. Every 1000 hours: Replace ducting if kinked or collapsed. Every 2000 hours: Service gas burner (clean ports, test ignition).
Typical operational life is 10–15 years with proper maintenance. Drum replacement is the major overhaul (2000 EUR parts + labor) and occurs around year 8.
Energy consumption is 8–12 kWh per 45 kg load (gas burner: 4–5 kWh thermal energy equivalent, electrical motors: 1–1.5 kWh). Total cost per load is approximately 1–2 EUR in energy + water (cooling), making dryer running cost the largest operational expense after labor.
