Dryer Booster Fan Product
Overview
A dryer booster fan is an inline ductwork fan installed inside the exhaust duct of a clothes dryer to increase airflow when the dryer is weak or slow-drying. Clothes dryers work by heating air, tumbling wet clothes inside, then exhausting humid air outside. Long ductwork runs, lint buildup, or exterior hood restriction all reduce airflow, forcing the dryer to work harder while taking longer to dry clothes. A Fan Motor powered booster mounted in the ductwork supplements this airflow, overcoming resistance and restoring drying performance.
The design is simple: a dryer-booster-fan-centrifugal-impeller fan in an Fan Housing sits inline between the dryer and the wall vent. A Pressure-Sensitive Switch senses when the dryer is running and automatically turns the fan on. A Speed Controller optionally modulates speed based on duct pressure or manual selection. Vibration Mounting System isolators prevent the fan noise from vibrating the ducts and surrounding walls.
This is a retrofit solution: the fan fits into existing 4-inch or 5-inch diameter ductwork without requiring replacement of ducts or structural work.
How it works
The Mains Cord connects to a standard outlet or hardwired to a nearby circuit. The Control Board and Microcontroller are powered continuously in standby mode, drawing minimal current.
When the dryer starts, humid air from the lint filter is drawn into the Inlet Flange. As this air flows through the Fan Housing spiral casing, pressure in the duct drops. The Pressure Diaphragm diaphragm inside senses this pressure differential. When the pressure drop exceeds the Sensitivity Adjustment adjustable setpoint (typically 15–30 Pa), the Relay Switch closes, energizing the Fan Motor.
The Motor Rotor brushless DC or EC (electronically commutated) motor spins the Fan Impeller centrifugal fan wheel. As the impeller rotates at 1500–3000 rpm, it accelerates air radially outward, creating additional pressure that adds to the dryer's exhaust pressure. This combined pressure pushes humid air faster through the Duct System flex and rigid ducts toward the exterior.
The Exterior Wall Hood at the wall vent has a spring-loaded flapper that swings open as air pressure rises, and closes when the dryer stops, preventing backflow of cold outdoor air into the house.
If the user prefers manual control, the Speed Control Knob potentiometer on the Power Switch control panel allows them to set a fixed speed (say, 50% for quiet operation, 100% for maximum boost). Alternatively, some models use automatic pressure-sensing: the Microcontroller reads the pressure sensor continuously and modulates motor voltage via a Relay, ramping the fan speed up or down to maintain the duct pressure at the setpoint. This adaptive mode reduces fan noise and energy by running only as hard as needed.
The [[dryer-booster-fan-bearing|ball-bearing]] in the motor shaft spins freely, and the Rubber Isolators elastomer pads and Support Frame aluminum frame decouple motor vibration from the ductwork structure. Without isolation, the spinning fan would vibrate the duct, creating humming or rattling noise inside the attic or walls. Good isolation keeps noise below 40 dB(A), barely audible.
Typical booster fans move 80–200 CFM (cubic feet per minute) of air, supplementing a standard dryer's ~300 CFM output. This allows drying times to drop from 45–60 minutes to 25–40 minutes on the same dryer cycle, saving energy and reducing heat stress on fabrics.
Installation involves turning off the dryer power, disconnecting the duct from the dryer outlet, inserting the fan Inlet Flange into the duct, and reconnecting the outlet side to the remaining ductwork. The Duct Clamp stainless clamps secure flex ducts to flanges. The Wall Mount mounts the fan to a joist or attic wall.
Common problems this solves: very long duct runs (>25 feet) where dryer alone cannot push air; crushed or kinked flexible ducts restricting flow; exterior hood dampers stuck or heavily restricted by lint accumulation; or moisture recirculation when the hood closes slowly, pulling conditioned house air back in. A booster fan quickly restores drying performance and significantly reduces dryer operating time and wear.
The dryer-booster-fan-thermal-fuse or automatic shutoff provides safety: if the motor ever stalls (duct blocked, bearings jammed), the Microcontroller detects low rpm and cuts power within seconds, preventing motor burnout.
