Pipe Inspection Crawler Product
Overview
A pipe inspection crawler is a small tracked robot that drives through pipelines, sewers, and culverts carrying a camera and sensors to survey the interior without anyone entering the pipe. An operator stands at a manhole or access point watching a live video feed and steering the crawler down the line, logging cracks, root intrusion, corrosion, and joint defects against distance travelled. It replaces confined-space entry — dangerous and often impossible in small or flooded pipes — with a remotely driven platform that can run hundreds of metres into a line and bring back a recorded, measured survey.
How it works
The Crawler Chassis is a watertight, pressure-rated body riding on two cleated Rubber Track belts. Each track is turned by its own Track Drive module — a sealed brushless Drive Motor through a reduction gear — and the crawler steers like a tank by running the two sides at different speeds. A motorised Camera Elevator column raises the camera so it stays centred as pipe diameter changes.
Survey work is done by the Pan-Tilt Camera Head, a sealed dome with a motorised zoom Zoom Camera Module, continuous-rotation pan and tilt motors, and an LED Ring Light illuminator to light the pipe ahead. The Sensor Pack pack adds an IMU for attitude and distance odometry, gas cells that warn of combustible or toxic atmospheres, and a Laser Profiler that projects a laser ring the camera reads to measure pipe diameter and ovality.
Power, video, and control travel up the Tether & Reel — a strength-bearing composite cable wound on a motorised reel with a slip ring so it can pay out and retrieve without twisting the conductors. At the surface, the Surface Control Unit console captures and records video, logs defects against cable distance, and drives the crawler from a joystick and touchscreen. For short untethered runs an onboard Onboard Battery keeps the crawler powered when only a data line is in use.
