French Fry Vending Machine Product

Overview

A french fry vending machine is an automated food service kiosk that stores frozen potato products, deep-fries them in oil on demand, and dispenses hot, fresh fries to customers 24/7. Unlike traditional snack vending machines that dispense pre-packaged items, this requires real-time thermal cooking: a heating bath, timed frying cycles, moisture extraction, and careful portioning of a hot, fragile food product.

The Frozen Storage Module holds 10–15 kg of frozen french fries at −18 °C, fed by the Auger Feeder into the Deep Fryer Module, which maintains a 5 L oil bath at 175 °C using a 3 kW Heating Element. When a customer orders via the User Interface, the Master Control Board dispense a measured portion of frozen fries into a basket, submerge it in hot oil, and start a countdown timer. After 3–4 minutes, the Basket Lift Arm motors raise the basket above the oil level, draining excess oil back into the tank. The hot fries then drop down the Dispensing Chute into a customer-supplied or vended container. Optionally, the Seasoning Dispenser module pneumatically sprays salt or seasoning powder. The Ventilation System system extracts steam and cooking odours via a charcoal filter.

These machines are deployed in transit hubs, movie theatres, sports venues, and street markets where fresh hot food meets 24/7 availability. The main engineering challenge is safe handling of hot oil in an unattended environment, reliable cycle timing, and acceptable odour/smoke management in indoor spaces.

How it works

The Frozen Storage Module is a small insulated box lined with polyurethane and connected to a 0.5 kW refrigeration unit (sealed hermetic compressor, R134a, 400 W). The unit maintains −18 °C via a thermostat. Frozen fries, vacuum-packed in 250 g portions, stack in the Product Hopper. When an order arrives, the Master Control Board sends a timed pulse to the Stepper Motor (NEMA 23 stepper), which rotates a helical screw shaft. The rotating Auger Flighting pushes the frozen fries through a metering section, then drops them into the waiting basket suspended in the oil tank.

The Deep Fryer Module is a stainless steel tank holding 5 L of food-grade vegetable oil. A submerged 3 kW Heating Element (wrapped nichrome wire inside a ceramic sheath) warms the oil. The Temperature Controller is a PID controller with an RTD (resistance temperature detector) sensor at the bottom of the tank. When the measured oil temperature falls below 172 °C (after a cold batch is dropped), the PID loop adjusts the heater duty cycle to restore 175 °C. Overshoot protection prevents the oil from exceeding 185 °C, which would degrade flavour and cause smoking.

Once the fries are in the hot oil, the Countdown Timer, a programmable logic relay (PLR), counts down 3–4 minutes (user-selectable). At timeout, the PLR energizes a solenoid valve or relay controlling the Lift Drive Motor, a brushed DC servo. The motor raises the pivoting Basket Lift Arm arm, lifting the basket and its contents above the oil surface. Oil drips back through the mesh basket into the tank. The basket reaches a mechanical stop above the Dispensing Chute, an angled aluminum funnel. The motor then reverses briefly, tilting the basket to dump the hot fries into the chute. Gravity carries the fries down the chute into the Container Mount, where the customer's cup or vended container sits on a motorized flip platform.

Immediately after frying, the Ventilation System system activates. A brushless EC (electronically commutated) blower motor draws steam and cooking odours upward through the fryer hood into a Charcoal Filter Cartridge (layered activated charcoal and HEPA). The charcoal removes the characteristic potato-frying odour; HEPA removes oil mist. The filtered air exits to the environment or is recirculated indoors (depending on installation). The filter cartridge is user-replaceable and typically changed every 2–4 weeks depending on usage.

Optionally, the Seasoning Dispenser module activates after dispensing. A small hopper holds 2 kg of powdered salt or seasoning. A 12 V solenoid-driven diaphragm pump pressurizes air into a powder canister, forcing the powder through a wide-angle nozzle. The nozzle disperses a light coating of seasoning over the hot fries as they descend the chute. Pneumatic actuation avoids oil contamination of electrical motors.

The User Interface, a 5 inch capacitive touchscreen (IP65 rated), displays product options, pricing, and real-time queue status. Payment is handled by an integrated EMV Card & NFC Reader supporting EMV chip cards, contactless NFC (Apple Pay, Google Pay), and QR code mobile payments.

The Power Supply, a 6 kW industrial power supply converting 240 V AC (single-phase or 3-phase) to multiple regulated rails, powers the heater (largest load at 3 kW), motors, and controls. A 32 A Circuit Breaker (32 A) protects the input. An integrated UPS module allows 2–5 minutes of graceful shutdown if mains power fails, preventing oil from being left unattended in a hot tank.

Regular maintenance includes draining and filtering the oil (biweekly), replacing the charcoal filter cartridge (monthly under heavy use), and visual inspection of heater integrity and basket mesh for corrosion. Temperature logs from the Master Control Board help operators identify failing heaters or thermostat drift.
