Ice Cream Vending Machine Product

Overview

An ice cream vending machine is a fully automated refrigerated kiosk that stores, displays, and dispenses frozen desserts on demand. Unlike beverage vending machines that dispense a single item per transaction, an ice cream machine must manage a carousel of discrete products, each independently retrieved by a robotic arm, then handed to the customer through a service aperture.

The Freezer Cabinet maintains an internal temperature of −18 °C, safely preserving product quality and preventing melting. The Refrigeration System system continuously circulates cold air through the sealed chamber, with thermostatic control monitoring the evaporator. The customer selects a product via the User Interface Display, which displays product images, prices, and flavour options. Payment is accepted through the Payment Module module (cards, coins, mobile wallet). Once payment is confirmed, the Master Control Board signals the Robotic Dispensing Arm to navigate the Product Storage carousel to the correct product position, grasp it with a Vacuum Gripper, and deliver it to an access window. The entire transaction takes 5–8 seconds.

These machines are typically deployed in high-traffic retail environments (malls, transit hubs, amusement parks, hotels) where 24/7 convenience and minimal labour are competitive advantages. Remote monitoring via cellular connectivity allows operators to track inventory, cash flow, and thermal faults in real time.

How it works

The Refrigeration System is a sealed vapor-compression cycle. The Hermetic Compressor pressurizes refrigerant (R404A) to 25–30 bar, which condenses in the Air Condenser Coil coil mounted on the rear of the cabinet. A rear-mounted fan cools the condenser with ambient air. High-pressure liquid refrigerant flows through the Thermostatic Expansion Valve, a thermostatic metering device that drops the pressure and allows rapid evaporation. The low-pressure vapor enters the Evaporator Coil, a coil wrapped around the internal chamber, where it absorbs heat from the product and cabinet walls. The evaporator outlet temperature is sensed; when it drops below −20 °C, a thermostat de-energizes the compressor. When the Cabinet Temperature Sensor mounted in the storage zone rises above −16 °C, the thermostat re-starts the compressor. This maintains a stable −18 °C without temperature swing. The Thermal Insulation, typically 150 mm polyurethane foam, reduces the refrigeration load and improves energy efficiency.

The Product Storage carousel is a rotating steel turntable that can hold eight shelves, each with five product slots (40 total positions). Each product slot has a spring-loaded Product Stop Clip to prevent the product from rolling when the carousel rotates. The Carousel Drive Motor, a stepper motor with a 20:1 reduction gearbox, rotates the carousel in 45° increments, indexing one product into the dispense zone per step. A mechanical or optical index sensor confirms position.

When a customer selects a product on the User Interface Display, the Master Control Board (an ARM-based PLC) verifies payment via the Payment Module module, then sends a move command to the carousel motor. The carousel rotates to align the selected product with the Robotic Dispensing Arm. The arm consists of three aluminum link segments connected by servo motors at the base, elbow, and wrist. Each Servo Motor is a brushed DC motor (100–200 W) with an optical Encoder for position feedback and a harmonic drive for high torque density. The control board rapidly resolves the arm kinematics (inverse kinematics solver in firmware) to align the Vacuum Gripper above the target product.

The gripper uses a simple suction cup design. When the Vacuum Pump, a small rotary vane pump (12 V DC, 60 mL/min), runs, it pulls air from a manifold connected to multiple silicone suction cups (75 mm diameter). Applying −0.6 bar suction creates enough force to lift a 500 g product without damaging it. Once the product is gripped, the arm retracts and positions it above the delivery tray (typically a motorized carousel or slide that moves the product forward into a service window). The product is lowered gently, the suction is released, and the product rests on the customer-accessible tray.

The Payment Module module integrates three payment types: a EMV Card Reader (EMV + NFC contactless), a Coin Validator (optical coin counter), and a MDB Protocol Board gateway that bridges the local vending protocol to online payment networks (Apple Pay, Google Pay, credit/debit cards). The module communicates with the Master Control Board via USB or a proprietary MDB (Multidrop Bus) protocol.

The Power Supply converts 240 V AC mains to regulated 24 V DC (for controls) and 12 V DC (for motors) via a 1.5 kW industrial switched-mode power supply. A Thermal Breaker (20 A thermal) protects the input. A Main Contactor (heavy-duty electromagnetic relay) switches the compressor on/off, preventing high inrush current from disrupting the control circuit. A small battery-backed uninterruptible power supply (UPS) is often included to allow safe shutdown and error-logging if mains power fails.

Remote monitoring is achieved through an embedded cellular module (4G LTE) that uploads temperature, inventory, payment transactions, and fault codes to a cloud platform every 5 minutes. Operators can remotely trigger inventory audits, disable products (if stock is exhausted or temperature exceeds limits), and dispatch refill/servicing based on real-time alerts.
