Ice Vending Machine Product

Overview

An ice vending machine is a complete ice factory packaged as an unattended retail kiosk. Unlike a convenience-store freezer stocked from a delivery truck, the machine makes its own ice on site, holds it in an insulated bin, and bags it only when a customer pays. Large pad-mounted units produce 500-1,600 kg per day and sell a 9 kg bag for a fraction of packaged-ice retail price, which is the core of the business model: no packaging plant, no cold chain, no driver.

The machine is organized as a production line stacked vertically. At the top, the Ice-Making Plant freezes filtered water into cubes. The cubes fall into the Ice Storage Bin, which buffers a few hundred kilograms between production and demand. Below the bin, the Bagging System line meters, fills, and seals a bag, and the Dispensing Chute delivers it to the customer bay. The Payment System stack and Control Electronics tie the sequence to money, and the whole assembly lives inside a weatherproof Outdoor Enclosure.

How it works

Ice making follows the standard freeze/harvest cycle of a commercial cuber. The Coolant Pump lifts water from the Water Sump to the Water Distributor, which sheets it down the face of the Evaporator Grid. Refrigerant boiling inside the grid at roughly -12 °C freezes a layer of ice from the flowing water; because only the purest water freezes first, dissolved minerals stay in the recirculating stream and the cubes come out clear. When the Ice Thickness Probe contacts the ice sheet, the Control Electronics ends the freeze: the Hot Gas Valve routes hot discharge gas from the Hermetic Compressor into the evaporator, the bond melts in under a minute, and the slab slides onto the Cutter Grid, whose heated wires part it into cubes. The Drain Pump then purges the mineral-concentrated sump water and the Inlet Solenoid Valve refills through the Water Filter Train.

The Refrigeration Circuit circuit is conventional vapor compression: the compressor discharges into an air-cooled condenser (Radiator) swept by a Blower Motor fan, liquid passes the Filter Drier and Expansion Valve, and two Pressure Sensor transducers let the controller detect dirty condensers, low charge, or fan failure before they become compressor failures.

Storage is where vending machines differ from restaurant ice makers. Cubes sitting in a pile slowly sinter together, so the Agitator Rake, turned at a few rpm by the Agitator Drive, periodically stirs the bin to keep the ice free-flowing. The Bin Shell is foamed with polyurethane and typically loses only 2-4 % of its contents per day to melt; meltwater drains away rather than refreezing into a block. The Bin Level Sensor stops the ice plant when the bin is full and restarts it as sales draw the level down, so the machine builds inventory overnight for peak afternoon demand.

Vend sequence

A sale starts at the Payment System stack. The Coin Acceptor, Bill Validator, and Card Reader all report over the vending industry's MDB bus to the Payment Interface Board, which posts established credit to the main controller. The customer picks bag size on the LCD Panel with its Touch Digitizer overlay, or selects bulk vend to fill a cooler chest directly.

For a bagged vend, the Discharge Auger runs ice from the bin into the Weigh Hopper until its load cells read the target weight, within about ±100 g. Meanwhile the Bag Opener blows open the top bag on the Bag Magazine and the Bag Sensor confirms it is presented. The hopper gate dumps, the Heat-Seal Bar clamps the bag mouth and fires its impulse Heating Element for about a second to weld it, and the finished bag drops into the Chute Body. The Vend Sensor photo eye confirms delivery before the controller closes the transaction; if the bag hangs up, the machine retries or refunds rather than charging for nothing. The whole cycle takes 15-30 seconds.

Control and operations

The Main Control Board sequences everything through its Relay and Power MOSFET outputs: compressor contactor, pumps, hot gas valve, agitator, auger, and seal bar, with interlocks such as never running the seal element without clamp pressure and never starting the compressor against high head pressure. A Telemetry Modem uploads sales, bin level, water and refrigeration faults to a remote portal, which matters because these machines sit unattended on fuel-station and roadside pads; an operator typically services a route of machines weekly, restocking the Bag Magazine, emptying the Cash Box, and swapping filter cartridges.

Sanitation drives much of the detail design. Everything in the water and ice path is stainless steel or NSF-listed polymer, the Chute Door keeps warm humid air out of the chute between vends, and the periodic sump purge prevents scale and biofilm. Machines certified to NSF/ANSI 12 must also support scheduled clean-in-place of the evaporator and distributor with food-safe descaler.
