Jet Hand Dryer
ProductOverview
A jet hand dryer propels high-speed air through a narrow nozzle slot to dry wet hands in 12–15 seconds without paper towels, reducing waste and restroom maintenance costs. Unlike older warm-air hand dryers (which took 30–45 seconds), modern jet dryers use a high-power brushless motor to accelerate air to 40+ m/s (130+ ft/s), physically stripping water droplets from hands with kinetic force rather than merely warming air. The technology is used in airports, office buildings, restaurants, and sports facilities, where it eliminates the trash burden of paper towels and the supply chain cost of restocking. A high-traffic restroom with a jet dryer replaces ~50 lbs of paper towels per week.
The heart is the Blower Motor Assembly, a brushless EC (electronically commutated) motor that draws 1.5–2 kW continuous and spins at 2200–3000 RPM. Unlike older universal motors (which use brushes and are noisy), EC motors are electronically commutated and silent, with integrated power electronics that convert the single-phase 110V AC input into three-phase electronic commutation. The motor drives a Blower Impeller, a centrifugal impeller that accelerates air to extreme velocity. An optional Heating Element raises outlet air temperature to 50–60°C, speeding evaporation and improving comfort. The Air Filter Assembly is a replaceable HEPA-13 cartridge capturing dust and respiratory droplets, critical for public health. A Motion Sensor Module detects hand presence and activates the dryer. The Outlet Nozzle is a precisely shaped convergent slot that converts the blower's radial outlet into a narrow, high-velocity vertical jet. A Drain Tank at the base collects any condensation from moisture in the outlet air, preventing water puddling on the floor.
How it works
A user places wet hands beneath the Outlet Nozzle. The Motion Sensor Module detects the presence and sends a signal to the Control and Power Board, which energizes the motor contactor. The motor spins up in ~1 second to 2500+ RPM, and pressurized air flows out the nozzle at 40+ m/s. This jet of air hits the user's hands and immediately strips water droplets outward and downward. The user moves their hands slowly up and down in the jet stream, rolling and rubbing their fingers together to expose all surfaces. In 12–15 seconds, the hands are completely dry. The motor draws significant power at startup (up to 18 A inrush), so the dryer is usually on a dedicated circuit. The Control and Power Board includes power-factor correction (PFC) circuitry to minimize line harmonic distortion. The Heating Element (if present) is controlled by a thermostat to avoid excessively hot outlets. The Drain Tank slowly fills over weeks and is emptied by a facility manager, or some models have an auto-drain valve. The Air Filter Assembly should be replaced every 3–6 months depending on dust levels. Maintenance is minimal: clean the nozzle of lint, drain the tank, and change the filter cartridge annually. A jet dryer costs $600–$1,200 per unit but has no moving parts exposed to the user, minimal mechanical failure, and a lifespan of 10–15 years, making it cost-effective for any restroom with sustained daily traffic.
