Auto Towel Dispenser Product
Overview
An automatic paper towel dispenser senses hand presence with an infrared detector and advances a paper roll to the cutting position, then severs a single towel at a preset length (7–11 inches)—a touchless, hygienic alternative to manual pull dispensers. One sensor activation delivers one towel, preventing users from pulling multiple sheets and reducing waste by 25–35% compared to traditional dispensers. Used in airports, hospitals, offices, and fast-food chains, automatic dispensers improve restroom hygiene, reduce restocking labor, and lower operating costs despite higher upfront investment. The unit is wall-mounted and battery-powered, making retrofit simple.
The Housing Assembly is a compact stainless-steel or ABS plastic case with the Infrared Sensor Module window at the front and a towel-delivery slot. Inside, the Roll Spindle is a spring-loaded horizontal axis holding the standard 4.5" paper roll. The Feed Motor Assembly is a small 6V DC motor with a high-ratio gearbox that momentarily rotates the spindle, advancing the paper by one towel's worth. The Cutting Blade Assembly is positioned just below the dispenser outlet and severs the towel with either an oscillating solenoid or a fixed guillotine motion. When the Infrared Sensor Module detects a hand at 10–25 cm distance, the Control Board triggers a short motor pulse. The motor drives the spindle a fractional rotation, advancing one towel length through the cutting zone, and simultaneously (or in sequence) the blade fires, severing the towel and dropping it into the user's hands. A Friction Brake holds the roll stationary between pulls, preventing unintended unraveling.
How it works
A user approaches the dispenser and places their hands below the sensor. The Infrared LED emits a pulse of infrared light, and the IR Photodetector measures the reflection. If strong enough (indicating a hand within range), the Control Board microcontroller triggers the sequence: first, the Feed Motor Assembly pulses, rotating the spindle just enough to advance one pre-cut towel length (typically 8 inches). Simultaneously or immediately after, the Cutting Blade Assembly oscillates or fires, severing the towel at the cutting edge. The severed towel falls into the user's waiting hands. The user takes it, dries their hands, and steps aside. If they step back under the sensor, the sequence repeats, dispensing one more towel. The design prevents wasting paper: most users pull once, and if they need a second towel, they actively request it rather than grabbing extra sheets from a manual dispenser. At the end of the week, when the roll is nearly exhausted, a facility manager unlatches the Roll Spindle end cap, removes the cardboard spindle, and threads a fresh roll onto the axis—a 30-second task. Some advanced models include jam-clearing features and sensor sensitivity adjustment. Battery life is typically 4–6 months at 50–100 activations/day, making the $200–$400 upfront cost economical; many facilities report breaking even on the initial investment within 18 months through reduced paper consumption and labor savings.
