Battery-Swap Electric Moped

Product

Overview

A battery-swap moped separates the vehicle from its energy supply. Instead of parking at a charger for hours, the rider opens the Hinged Seat Base, pulls two depleted Swappable Battery Pack units out by their handles, pushes them into an automated street-side cabinet, and takes two charged ones, under a minute, no cables, no waiting. Gogoro in Taiwan proved the model at scale: its network handles hundreds of thousands of swaps per day, and similar systems run in India and Southeast Asia, where two-wheelers are primary transport and home charging is often impossible. The vehicle itself is a conventional electric scooter; the engineering interest is concentrated in the pack, the dock and the connected controller that ties both to a subscription network.

The swappable pack

Each pack is sized around the limit of what a person can comfortably lift one-handed: roughly 9-10 kg for 1.6 kWh. Inside the drop-rated Pack Shell sit about 140 Li-ion Cell, 18650 cells in a 14s10p array, giving 50 V nominal, plus a pack-resident BMS Board that owns the cells for life, it logs temperature, cycle count and internal resistance whether the pack is in a moped, a charging cabinet or a courier's backpack. A Thermal Fuse and a membrane Pack Relief Vent cover the failure cases the BMS cannot.

The electrical interface is a Blind-Mate Connector: chamfered, self-aligning power and CAN contacts that mate from the insertion motion alone, with no connector for the user to handle. An RFID Pack Identity Tag carries the pack's identity; the vehicle and the swap cabinet both authenticate it over CAN before closing a contactor, which is what makes the subscription model enforceable and stolen packs worthless.

The dock

The vehicle side of the interface is the Pack Dock Interface. Each Dock Bay funnels the pack onto its Dock Contact Block, and a solenoid Dock Latch retains it until released from the dash or the rider's phone app. The subtle electronics live on the Precharge / OR-ing Board. Two packs come back from a swap at slightly different voltages, and connecting them directly would dump current from the fuller pack into the emptier one; the board precharges the DC bus through a resistor before closing contactors, then diode-ORs or actively switches the packs so both discharge without back-feeding. The same board reports each pack's state to the controller so range is computed across both.

Drive

Propulsion is a gearless Rear Hub Motor in the rear wheel: a stationary Stator Assembly on the Hub Axle, surrounded by a rotating Hub Rotor Shell shell lined with a ring of 30 Neodymium Magnet poles, the rim and tire mounted directly on the shell. With no chain, belt or gears, the drivetrain has essentially one wearing part, the tire, which suits fleet economics. Torque reaction feeds through the Swingarm torque arms. Rated power is around 3 kW with 4-7 kW peaks, good for the 45 km/h L1e-B moped class in Europe and rather more in unrestricted markets.

The Smart Vehicle Controller runs field-oriented control on a 12-Power MOSFET bridge under an Microcontroller, but its second board is what distinguishes the category: a Compute SoC Module with LTE and GPS handles telematics, over-the-air firmware, pack authentication, geofenced speed limits for rental fleets, and theft tracking. A DC-DC Converter converter derives the 12 V rail for lights, the LCD Panel dash and the dock latches.

Chassis

The rolling chassis is proven scooter practice: a steel Underbone Frame frame with the pack bay caged behind the Floorboard, an 80 mm Telescopic Fork, twin Rear Shock dampers and 12-inch wheels. Braking combines a 220 mm Front Brake Disc and 180 mm Rear Brake Disc through a CBS Proportioning Valve that sends part of any rear-lever input to the front caliper, while a Pressure Sensor lets the controller blend regenerative braking in before the friction brakes do work, regen recovers a few percent of range in urban duty and halves pad wear.

Why swapping wins where it wins

The economics hinge on utilization. A swap cabinet charges packs slowly and gently at 0.3-0.5C, off-peak when possible, which extends cell life versus fast charging and lets the operator do per-pack health management at the depot. The rider buys energy as a service and never owns the most failure-prone, fastest-depreciating component of an EV. The cost is standardization lock-in: the pack form factor, connector and protocol must stay fixed across vehicle generations, which is why successful swap networks behave less like vehicle makers and more like utilities.
