Chopper Motorcycle

Product

Overview

A chopper is a custom motorcycle defined by its silhouette rather than its performance. The name comes from the practice of chopping away everything considered unnecessary from a stock bike, then stretching and raking the front end to produce a long, low, dramatic stance. The defining features are an extended Extended Front Fork, a steeply raked Raked Steering Head, tall Ape-Hanger Handlebars handlebars, and usually a rigid frame with no rear suspension. The example documented here is built around a large air-cooled V-Twin Engine V-twin, the configuration most associated with the style. A chopper is built to be looked at and to cruise in a straight line, not to corner quickly or carry luggage.

Engine

The heart of a chopper is almost always a large-displacement, air-cooled V-twin with the cylinders set at a narrow angle, 45 degrees in the classic American layout. The Flywheel Crankshaft is a pressed-together flywheel assembly with a single crankpin shared by both cylinders, which is why the connecting rods take the Fork-and-Blade Rod fork-and-blade form: one rod is forked at its big end and straddles the other. Each Cylinder Barrel is a finned air-cooled barrel topped by a two-valve Cylinder Head operated by Pushrod rods and rockers, rather than overhead cams. The engine is tuned for low-rpm torque and the distinctive uneven exhaust beat, not for high power, and the Drag Pipe Exhaust drag pipes are chosen as much for their sound as for flow.

Primary drive and gearbox

Power leaves the engine through a Primary Drive that, in the traditional layout, uses a Primary Chain in an enclosed oil bath to carry torque to a Wet Clutch and a separate 5-Speed Gearbox. This separate-transmission arrangement, rather than the unit construction of most modern bikes, is part of the heritage look. The gearbox is a five-speed with tall, widely spaced ratios suited to relaxed cruising. Final drive is by a toothed Belt Final Drive belt, which runs quietly, stays clean, and needs little maintenance compared with a chain, and which has become standard on production cruisers.

Frame and front end

The chassis is what makes a chopper a chopper. The Rigid Hardtail Frame is a rigid steel hardtail: the rear axle bolts directly to a welded Rigid Rear Section with no rear shock, so the rider feels every bump but the lines stay clean and low. The steering head is set at a steep rake angle, commonly between 35 and 45 degrees, far more than a normal bike. To reach the ground at that angle, the Extended Front Fork uses extended Extended Fork Tube stanchions, and Raked Triple Tree yokes with built-in offset add rake without over-stressing the head tube. The result is a long wheelbase that tracks straight beautifully but turns slowly and steers heavily at low speed.

Wheels and brakes

Chopper wheels follow a deliberate front-to-rear contrast. The Front Wheel is a tall, narrow 21-inch spoked wheel with a slim tire, which emphasises the stretched front end. The Rear Wheel uses a wide rim and a fat tire, sometimes 200 mm or more across, carrying the Rear Belt Pulley for the belt. Braking is often kept minimal for the clean look: a single front and single rear disc with no ABS. This is one of the practical trade-offs of the style, since the heavy bike and modest brakes demand a long stopping distance.

Bodywork and styling

Nearly every visible part is chosen for appearance. The Bodywork centres on a stretched Teardrop Fuel Tank teardrop tank that is usually hand-painted, a shortened or bobbed Bobbed Rear Fender, a low sprung Solo Seat, and a tall Sissy Bar backrest behind it. Extensive Chrome Trim Set plating covers the engine, controls, and brackets. The Electrical System wiring is routed inside the bars and frame so no harness is visible, with only a small round Headlight on the fork. None of this improves how the bike rides, but the visual coherence is the entire point of the machine.

Riding character and variants

A chopper rides the way it looks: stable and relaxed on a straight road, with the rider sitting low and reaching up to the Ape-Hanger Handlebars and forward to the Forward Foot Control foot controls. The long rake makes the steering heavy and slow, the rigid rear is harsh, and the modest brakes mean it is not a bike for hurrying. Variants range from period-correct rigid builds that recreate the hand-made bikes of the 1960s and 1970s, through bobbers, which keep the minimal styling but a shorter, less radical front end, to modern factory cruisers that adopt the chopper look while adding rear suspension and current electronics. Many choppers remain one-off custom builds, where the frame, paint, and chrome are tailored entirely to the owner.
