Trials Motorcycle

Product

Overview

A trials motorcycle is a specialized competition machine built for observed trials, a sport where riders pick their way through natural and artificial obstacle sections at walking pace without putting a foot down. Everything about the bike serves slow-speed balance, traction, and instant throttle response, and almost nothing serves comfort or top speed. The most visible sign of this focus is the absence of a seat: the rider stands on the pegs at all times, shifting body weight to keep the front wheel light and the rear tire planted. The machine is built around a small two-stroke engine in a very light frame, with long-travel front and rear suspension and grippy spoked wheels.

Trials bikes are among the lightest powered two-wheelers, often under 75 kg dry. The low mass lets the rider hop, pivot, and lift the machine over rocks and logs, maneuvers that would be impossible on a heavier motorcycle.

Engine and clutch

The two-stroke engine is a 125 to 300 cc liquid-cooled single tuned for torque just off idle rather than peak power. A reed valve controls intake into the magnesium crankcase, and the forged piston runs in a Nikasil-lined cylinder. Two-stroke engines suit trials because they make strong low-speed torque and respond instantly to the throttle, which the rider needs to loft the front wheel or drive over an obstacle from a near standstill.

The diaphragm clutch is the rider's most-used control. It is a hydraulic wet clutch with light lever effort and a progressive engagement that lets the rider feed power smoothly with one or two fingers while standing. The close-ratio gearbox gives five or six speeds, with low gearing throughout so the bike crawls under control.

Frame and weight

The lightweight frame is the structural heart of the trade-off between strength and mass. Modern frames use a 6061 aluminum main spar or thin-wall steel to keep weight down, with a minimal rear subframe since there is no seat or passenger to support. An aluminum skid plate protects the engine cases from rock strikes, since the bike is ridden directly over obstacles that contact the underside.

Suspension

The front fork is an inverted telescopic unit with around 160 mm of travel, sprung soft so the front tire conforms to rocks and roots for grip. The steering pivots on tapered head bearings held by a forged triple clamp.

The rear suspension uses a cast aluminum swingarm and a single monoshock driven through a rising-rate linkage. The linkage makes the suspension soft over small bumps for traction but progressively firmer deep in the stroke to resist bottoming on hard landings. Both ends are tuned for grip and control at low speed rather than for absorbing high-speed impacts.

Wheels, tires, and brakes

The wheel set pairs a 21-inch front wheel with an 18-inch rear wheel, both spoked for strength and easy repair. The defining component is the tire. The rear trials tire is a soft tubeless type run at very low pressure, often near 0.3 to 0.4 bar, so the tread spreads and molds around rocks for maximum grip. Running such low pressure is only possible because the tubeless construction will not pinch-flat the way a tube would.

The brake system uses hydraulic front and rear discs with strong, finely controllable feel. Precise braking matters more than outright power: the rider must hold the bike still on a steep face or lock the rear momentarily during a hop.

Controls and bodywork

The handlebar controls are set up for standing riding, with a wide tapered handlebar, a quick-action throttle for fast response, a hydraulic clutch lever, and a kill switch within thumb reach.

The bodywork is deliberately minimal: a front mudguard, a rear mudguard, and slim side panels over a small fuel tank of only two to three liters, since events are short and every kilogram counts.

Variants and use

Competition trials bikes come in displacement classes that match rider skill and rules, from 125 cc for youth and beginners up to 300 cc for the top championship class. Electric trials machines are a growing variant: a hub or mid motor replaces the two-stroke, delivering the same instant low-speed torque silently, which suits indoor and urban events. A small number of street-legal trials-derived bikes add lighting and a token seat for trail riding, but the pure competition machine stays stripped to the minimum needed to clear a section.
