Electric Skateboard

Overview

An electric skateboard is a motorized longboard that propels the rider via electric motors controlled by a wireless handheld remote. This build uses a dual belt-drive configuration: two brushless motors mounted alongside the rear truck transmit power through toothed belts to the rear wheels, giving strong acceleration and the grade-climbing ability that single-motor boards lack.

How it works

The rider stands on the Deck Assembly, a pressed laminate board topped with grip tape. Each end carries an Truck Assembly, the steering mechanism that leans into turns on urethane bushings. Four Wheel Assembly units roll on sealed bearings; the rear pair are driven.

Propulsion comes from the Drive Assembly. Its two BLDC Outrunner Motor outrunners spin drive pulleys, and timing belts carry that rotation to larger wheel pulleys, applying a fixed reduction that converts motor speed into wheel torque. Belt drive tolerates debris and shock better than a rigid gear train and is quieter than a direct hub motor.

The motors are commanded by the Dual VESC Controller, a dual-channel VESC that reads each motor's hall sensors and modulates a MOSFET bridge to control speed and regenerative braking. It draws from the Battery Pack, a 10S4P lithium pack with a BMS and an anti-spark loop key to safely connect the high-current bus.

Throttle and brake commands originate at the Handheld Remote, a handheld trigger unit that transmits over a 2.4 GHz link; releasing the trigger engages regenerative braking that feeds energy back into the pack. An LED Light Kit adds underglow and a headlight for visibility. The pairing of dual belt drive and a tunable VESC makes the board responsive across a wide speed and gradient range.
