Overview

A motorcycle is a two-wheeled motor vehicle built around an internal-combustion engine that drives the rear wheel through a multi-speed gearbox. This example uses a liquid-cooled parallel-twin, a layout that balances power, smoothness, and packaging well for middleweight machines. Unlike a scooter, it has a manual clutch and foot-shifted transmission, and a rigid frame that ties the steering head, engine, and swingarm into one load path.

How it works

The heart of the machine is the Engine, a parallel-twin with a 270-degree crankshaft, dual overhead cams, and electronic fuel injection through ride-by-wire throttle bodies. Combustion drives the pistons, the crankshaft converts that motion to rotation, and an integrated wet clutch and six-speed gearbox feed torque to the Final Drive, a sprocket-and-chain set that turns the rear wheel. Heat is shed by the radiator and coolant circuit, while the Exhaust System routes spent gas through a catalytic converter and muffler.

Everything mounts to the Frame, a welded steel trellis that uses the engine as a stressed member and carries the steering-head bearings. The Front Fork is an inverted telescopic unit with oil damping and coil springs; the Rear Suspension pairs an aluminum swingarm with a single shock. The Front Brakes use twin floating discs gripped by radial calipers for strong, fade-resistant stopping.

Fuel is stored in the Fuel Tank above the engine, with an in-tank pump supplying the injectors at pressure. Rider commands flow through the Handlebar, which carries the throttle grip, clutch and brake levers, and switchgear. The Electrical System system ties a 12 V battery, ECU, and regulator-rectifier into a harness that runs ignition, injection, lighting, and instruments. Together these systems give the rider direct control over a high-output engine in a light, agile chassis.
