Roadside Assistance Van

Product

Overview

A roadside assistance van is a light commercial vehicle fitted out as a mobile workshop and light recovery unit. It is the vehicle a motoring club or breakdown service sends to a stranded driver: in most cases the technician repairs the vehicle at the roadside and sends the customer on their way, and where that is not possible the van can tow or recover the casualty to a garage. It sits between a simple service car and a full heavy wrecker, handling cars, vans, and light commercials rather than trucks.

The van is a base vehicle plus a fitout. The Base Van supplies mobility and a cargo body; everything else is the equipment a technician needs to diagnose, repair, jump-start, inflate, free, and tow a disabled vehicle, organized so one person can work alone and safely at the side of a live road.

Base vehicle

The Base Van is a 3.5 to 7.5 tonne panel or box van. Its Van Engine carries a Heavy-Duty Alternator sized larger than standard because the recovery equipment draws heavily on electrical power. The Suspension and Brakes is reinforced with heavier Leaf Spring units at the rear to carry the weight of tools, spares, and recovery gear without sagging. The Cargo Body is lined and floored to take the racking and the loads the fitout imposes.

Recovery equipment

The Recovery Equipment handles the cases a repair cannot fix on the spot. A Recovery Winch with a Winch Motor and an automatic load brake pulls vehicles out of ditches, off verges, and back onto firm ground; Snatch Block pulleys double the pull or redirect the line around an obstacle. For towing, a rigid Tow Pole connects a casualty for a short suspended tow, or a Tow Dolly lifts the driven wheels of an automatic vehicle that cannot be towed on all four wheels. Hydraulic Jack units and Vehicle Skate let the technician lift and shift a vehicle in a tight space, and a set of rated Recovery Strap Set attaches the winch safely.

Power and jump-starting

A dead battery is the single most common call, so the Power System is central. Two deep-cycle Auxiliary Battery units, charged by the heavy alternator and a Power Supply converter, run the equipment without flattening the van's own starting battery. The Jump-Start Booster delivers a high-current pulse through heavy Booster Cable Set leads and insulated Jump Clamp units to start a vehicle with a flat battery. An AC Inverter supplies mains AC so the technician can run corded diagnostic and power tools, distributed through a fused Power Distribution Panel panel.

Tools and diagnostics

The Tool Fitout turns the cargo body into a workshop. Modular Shelving System and lockable Tool Drawer Unit units hold hand tools, a Power Tool Kit kit, and a Spare Parts Kit of belts, hoses, fuses, fluids, and fasteners that cover the bulk of roadside fixes. The most-used item is the Diagnostic Scanner, an OBD scanner that reads fault codes from the customer vehicle so the technician can identify the problem quickly rather than guess. A fold-down Work Bench with a vice gives a stable working surface.

Air and safety lighting

An onboard Compressed Air System with a Air Compressor and Air Tank reinflates tires through a retractable Air Hose Reel and runs air tools. Working at the roadside is the main hazard the design addresses, so the Warning System is extensive: an amber Light Bar, rotating Warning Beacon units, LED Scene Light floods for night work, and a rear Arrow Board that directs passing traffic around the stopped vehicles. A Warning Controller sequences all of it.

Communications and dispatch

The technician stays linked to the control room through the Communications System. A Two-Way Radio gives voice contact, a Mobile Data Terminal receives job tickets and navigation, and a GPS Tracker tracker reports the van's position so dispatch can send the nearest unit to each new call. This routing is what makes a breakdown fleet efficient, since response time is the metric customers judge.

Variants and use

Specifications scale with the operator. Motoring clubs run large fleets of lighter vans focused on fast repair and jump-starting, carrying minimal recovery gear and leaning on separate tow trucks for the cases that cannot be fixed. Independent recovery operators fit heavier winches and full towing equipment so one van can both repair and recover. Fleet and corporate breakdown services add electric and hybrid vehicle equipment, including insulated tools and high-voltage isolation procedures, as those vehicles become a larger share of the roadside caseload.
