Fire Monitor (Water Cannon) Product
Overview
A fire monitor, also called a water cannon or master-stream appliance, is a large fixed or portable nozzle that projects a high-volume stream of water or foam onto a fire from a safe standoff distance. Where a handline delivers a couple of hundred gallons per minute, a monitor delivers many times that, throwing a coherent column of water hundreds of feet to attack tank fires, warehouse blazes, aircraft incidents and other hazards too intense to approach. Because the reaction force of such a stream would knock a person off their feet, the monitor reacts that thrust into its mount and is aimed by gearing or remote control.
The appliance bolts down through its Inlet Flange and is fed past an Ball Valve. Horizontal aiming comes from the Swivel Base, whose self-locking worm gear lets the operator point the heavy barrel anywhere through 360 degrees, while the Elevation Joint sets the vertical trajectory. Conditioned flow travels up the Barrel / Waterway and exits the Adjustable Nozzle, which the operator varies from a long straight stream to a wide protective fog. For unattended area coverage the Oscillation Drive sweeps the stream automatically. Aiming is done at the Control Station by handwheels or a joystick, and the Locking Brake holds the chosen position against the jet.
How it works
Pressurized water arrives at the inlet flange and passes through the rotary water joint in the swivel base, which lets the waterway turn while the supply stays fixed. The flow climbs through the elevation elbow into the barrel, where internal straightening vanes strip out the swirl that would otherwise cause the stream to fan and lose range. At the nozzle a tapered bore accelerates the water to high velocity; advancing the pattern sleeve pushes a baffle into the bore to break the column into fog for heat protection, while a clip-on aspirator can draw in air to make foam. To aim, the operator turns the traverse and elevation worm sets through the handwheels or joystick; the worms are self-locking, so the monitor holds its aim and resists the back-driving force of the reaction thrust. With the powered drive engaged, a cam linkage reverses the traverse at each end of travel to sweep the stream automatically across the fire ground.
