Adjustable Bed Base Product

Overview

An adjustable bed base is a bed frame whose mattress deck is split into hinged sections that tilt under motor power. The Articulating Frame divides the sleeping surface into four panels: a head panel, a fixed central panel over the hips, a thigh panel, and a lower-leg panel. The Head Articulating Section rotates the upper body to about 65 degrees for reading or reflux relief; the Foot Articulating Section forms a knee break that lifts the legs to roughly 42 degrees. Both motions, and combinations such as the zero-gravity preset, are commanded from the Wireless Remote Handset.

The product category grew out of hospital beds but uses lighter construction: a perimeter frame of powder-coated steel tube, with each Perimeter Side Rail joined by bolt-in Cross Members so the base ships flat-packed. Queen and king sizes are frequently sold as two independent twin-XL bases placed side by side, which lets each sleeper articulate separately.

How it works

Motion comes from two low-voltage linear actuators. The Head Linear Actuator is the larger unit, typically rated 6000 N because it lifts the heaviest part of the occupant; the Foot Linear Actuator is usually a 4000 N unit of the same family. Inside each actuator, the Actuator DC Motor — a brushed 29 V DC motor of 50–70 W — drives a worm Helical Gear Pair that turns the Leadscrew and Nut. The screw's plastic nut travels along the Extension Tube, extending or retracting it. The worm stage and the shallow screw helix make the drive self-locking: when power is removed the bed holds position without a brake, and a back-driving load cannot lower the deck. A Limit Switch at each end of the stroke cuts motor current so the mechanism cannot ram its own end stops.

Each actuator pushes on a stamped Lift Arm through a Pivot Pin, converting linear stroke into rotation of the Section Sub-Frame about its hinge line. The geometry is chosen so the actuator's moment arm is longest near the flat position, where the gravitational torque of the occupant is greatest. The Actuator Pivot Brackets that anchor the actuators are welded to the frame and see the full thrust load, so they and their welds are the structural items checked in cyclic testing (UL 962 requires 30,000 full-travel cycles at rated load).

Electronics and control

The Control Box hangs under the central deck. An external or integrated Power Supply converts mains power to 29 V DC; the box's Microcontroller sequences the motors through a reversing stage built from Relays or Power MOSFET H-bridges, with PWM speed ramping on better units so sections start and stop without a jolt. Position memory is implemented either by timing motor run from a known end stop or by counting ripple pulses in the brushed-motor current, which gives repeatability of a few millimetres without an encoder. A Thermal Fuse and electronic current limiting protect against stalls; the actuators themselves are restricted to about a 10% duty cycle to keep winding temperature within class limits.

Commands arrive over a 2.4 GHz or 433 MHz link between the RF Transmitter Module in the handset and the RF Receiver Module in the box. The handset is a simple battery-powered board: an Microcontroller scans the silicone Remote Keypad and transmits keycodes; pairing is a one-time button sequence that stores the handset ID. Most control boxes also expose wired ports on their Connector bank for a second handset, under-bed lighting, and a battery backup pack that allows lowering the bed during a power outage.

Deck and mattress interface

The Mattress Platform determines comfort as much as the mechanism. Each Deck Panel is screwed to its section frame and covered by the Deck Upholstery Cover; on slatted variants, bowed birch Sprung Slats sit in flexible Slat Holders and add compliance under point loads. Only flexible mattresses — foam, latex, or pocket-coil — tolerate the fold lines; bonnell-coil and rigid-border mattresses are excluded by most manufacturers.

Because the deck tilts, the mattress must be restrained. The Foot Retainer Bar at the foot end stops the mattress sliding downhill when the head rises, and Side Retainer Stop stops limit lateral creep. The whole base stands on the Leg Set: threaded Threaded Legs with stackable Leg Extensions set frame height between about 15 and 35 cm, and Glide Foot caps protect the floor. Typical queen bases weigh 60–75 kg and carry a rated distributed load of 350 kg including the mattress.
