Garden Hose Reel Cart Product

Overview

A garden hose reel cart solves two nuisances of a long hose: storing 30–60 m of it without a tangled heap, and moving it around a garden without dragging the whole length behind. The hose winds onto a Reel Drum & Crank turned by a hand crank, and the drum rides on a wheeled Cart Frame & Handle that the user tilts and tows to wherever water is needed. The clever part is that water can flow while the hose is partly unwound: a Swivel & Inlet swivel feeds the spinning drum from a fixed tap connection, so there is no need to fully unreel before turning the water on.

A Guide Arm lays the hose evenly across the drum as it winds, and Hose Connectors join everything with push-fit fittings.

How it works

The hose coils around the Drum Barrel, contained between two large Side Flange discs. The drum turns on a central Reel Spindle through plastic Drum Bearing hubs, and the Crank Handle folds out to wind the hose back in after use. A Ratchet Lock pawl holds the drum against unwinding, so when only part of the hose is paid out it stays put rather than creeping back under the spring of a coiled, pressurised hose.

The element that makes a "live" reel work is the Swivel Union — a rotary union at the centre of the spindle. Water comes from the tap through a short Inlet Leader Hose (the "leader"), enters the static side of the swivel, and crosses into the rotating drum through a sealed bore. From there an Internal Elbow carries it to the start of the stored hose. Because the seal is a rotary one, the drum can spin freely to pay out or wind in while water flows continuously, with the O-Ring Set seals containing mains pressure of up to about 8 bar. A small Inlet Filter mesh keeps grit out of those seals, which are the part most likely to weep if they score.

Even layering

Wind a long hose onto a bare drum by hand and it piles up at one end, jams against a flange, and eventually refuses to wind further. The Guide Arm prevents this. As the drum turns, a sprung Guide Yoke carrying smooth Guide Roller rollers traverses back and forth across the drum width, steering each wrap of hose to lie beside the last. The rollers also protect the hose from abrasion at the feed point. The arm swings up on its Guide Pivot to give clear access when connecting the hose.

The cart and wheels

The Frame Body sets the drum at a height where cranking is comfortable without stooping, and a Tilt Handle lets the user tip the cart back onto its Wheel Set and tow it. The two wide-tread wheels matter more than they look: a reel loaded with 50 m of water-filled hose is heavy, and narrow wheels would sink into a lawn or scuff border edges. They run on a Wheel Hub over the Wheel Axle, retained by push-on Hub Cap caps. A Storage Tray on the frame holds the Spray Nozzle and spare couplers so they do not get lost in the shed.

Connectors

The fitting system is push-fit throughout. A Tap Adapter threads onto the garden tap, and from there everything connects with spring-collar Quick Connector couplers: press on to join, pull the collar to release. The couplers on the supply side shut off flow automatically when uncoupled, so the tap can stay on while a nozzle or sprinkler is swapped at the far end. Each hose section ends in a clamped Hose-End Fitting barb that accepts a connector.

Use and care

In use, the cart is wheeled to the work area, the hose pulled off the freely-spinning drum to the point of use, and water turned on at the tap. Afterwards the crank winds it back, the guide arm laying it flat. Two habits extend its life: drain the hose before winding so the reel is not storing several kilograms of standing water that can freeze and split the hose in winter, and bring the cart indoors or empty it before frost, since trapped water in the swivel and connectors will crack them. The swivel seals are the usual wear item; a weeping union is fixed by replacing the O-Ring Set rather than the whole reel.
