Lawn Mower

Overview

A walk-behind lawn mower cuts grass by spinning a horizontal steel blade at high speed inside a wheeled deck. This model is a self-propelled petrol unit: a single-cylinder overhead-valve engine drives the blade directly off the bottom of its crankshaft while a separate belt and transaxle turn the rear wheels so the operator only has to steer.

The Engine Assembly is a 163 cc air-cooled OHV petrol unit. A Recoil Starter spins the flywheel to crank it, a float-bowl Carburetor meters the fuel-air mixture, and a flywheel-magneto Ignition Coil fires the spark plug. A mechanical Governor holds engine speed steady as the cutting load rises and falls. The vertical crankshaft passes straight down through the deck to the blade.

How it works

Power leaves the crankshaft and enters the Cutting Assembly, where a keyed Blade Adapter couples the engine to a balanced Cutting Blade. The blade's airfoil wings both sever the grass and loft the clippings, creating the airflow that carries them out of the Cutting Deck and into the Grass Catcher at the rear. The deck shell shapes this airflow into a cutting chamber and channels the discharge.

For propulsion, the Self-Propel Drive takes a V-belt off the crankshaft pulley into a single-speed transaxle that turns the rear wheels. Squeezing the drive bail pulls a Bowden cable that engages the transaxle clutch.

Construction

Each Wheel Assembly carries the deck at the set cutting height through a spring-loaded lever adjuster, so all four wheels move together when the height is changed. The Handle & Controls folds for storage and carries the operator-presence blade bail; releasing it stops the blade through the flywheel brake. The blade spindle, transaxle, and wheels all run on sealed ball bearings, and the whole machine is bolted together with a common Fastener Set.
