Lawn Tractor Product

Overview

A lawn tractor combines an internal combustion engine, transmission, cutting deck, and operator seating in a self-propelled machine. The driver operates a Steering Wheel to guide the front wheels, while a hydrostatic or manual transmission pedal controls forward and reverse motion. The Mower Deck Assembly hangs beneath the tractor frame, its blades driven by a PTO Belt from the engine. A height-adjustment lever on the operator's armrest raises or lowers the deck so the operator can select grass cutting height (25–100 mm typical).

Ride-on mowers are suitable for properties larger than 500 m², where walking mowers would be exhausting. The elevated seated position reduces operator fatigue and provides a better view of the lawn and obstacles.

How it works

The Gasoline Engine burns gasoline, rotating its Crankshaft through internal combustion. A PTO Shaft extends from the engine, driving two main systems: the Transaxle Assembly (transmission and final drive to wheels) and the PTO Belt (blade spindle drive).

For wheel propulsion, the operator engages a lever on the Steering Wheel column or uses a separate transmission pedal (depending on hydrostatic vs. manual). In hydrostatic systems, engine power drives a pump that forces hydraulic fluid through control valves to wheel motors. Changing the valve position varies motor displacement and speed, enabling smooth forward, reverse, and stop without a discrete clutch.

In gear-drive systems, the Transmission Gear Set are shifted by lever. Engaging a gear connects the engine shaft through a series of spur gear ratios to the Differential Assembly, which distributes torque equally to the left and right rear wheels. The Differential Assembly also allows the outside wheel to turn faster during a turn, preventing scrubbing.

The Mower Deck Assembly contains one to three [[lawn-tractor-blade|blades]], each mounted on a Blade Spindle Assembly that rotates roughly horizontal at 2800–3500 RPM. The blades are flat steel with sharp leading edges. As the tractor moves forward, the rotating blades cut grass to the height determined by the Height Adjuster linkage. Clipped grass falls into the deck and exits the front or side chute, either landing on the lawn, falling into a catch bag, or being mulched (mashed further by re-cutting) before exiting.

The Steering System uses a traditional geared Steering Column connected by Tie Rod linkage to the front wheel hubs, so turning the wheel rotates the front wheels up to full lock (roughly 45° each direction). The Seat & Frame Assembly is mounted on Seat Suspension springs that absorb bumps from the lawn, reducing operator discomfort.
