Hair Straightener

Overview

The flat-iron straightener smooths hair by clamping it between two heated plates and drawing the iron along each section. The plates are aluminium coated with a tourmaline-infused ceramic surface that conducts heat evenly and reduces snagging. They are mounted on springs so they float and self-align to the hair, applying even pressure across the clamp.

The two heated arms form the Clamshell Housing, a hinged clamshell with a tension spring. The heated working surfaces live in the Heater Plate Assembly assembly.

How it works

Each plate is bonded to a ceramic PTC heating element. PTC heaters are self-regulating: their resistance rises sharply at a target temperature, so they pull less current as they get hot, which makes overshoot unlikely and warm-up fast. The Control Board reads a thermistor on each plate, drives the heaters to the set point, and shows the temperature on an LCD. Up/down buttons adjust the target across the working range.

Mains power reaches the iron through the Swivel Power Cord, whose swivel joint lets the cable rotate freely so it does not twist during styling. Inside, high-temperature wiring feeds the heaters and board.

Several measures keep the device safe at styling heat. A thermal fuse in the heater assembly opens permanently if the plates run away past a safe limit, the firmware enforces an idle auto shut-off, and a cool-touch Heat-Resistant Tip at the nose lets the user steady the iron near the hot end. The floating-plate brackets and suspension springs hold each plate flat against the hair while letting it tilt to match the section being pressed.
