Hair Clipper

Overview

The hair clipper cuts hair to a set length by passing it between two toothed blades, one fixed and one sliding rapidly across it. It is cordless and rechargeable, with a high-capacity 18650 cell that gives long runtime between charges. A side taper lever fine-tunes the cutting length, and a set of snap-on guide combs sets the base length for different cuts.

The Housing is a clamshell body that holds the motor, board and pack, while the Cutting Head carries the blade set and the drive that moves it.

How it works

The Rotary DC Motor is a brushed rotary DC motor. Its shaft turns an eccentric drive pin that converts rotation into a short back-and-forth stroke. That stroke passes through the Blade Drive Yoke to the moving blade in the Blade Set, which slides across the stationary blade roughly 6,000 times a minute. Hair caught between the aligned teeth is sheared as the blades cross. A tension spring keeps the two blades pressed together for a clean cut, and the taper lever shifts the stationary blade slightly to vary length without changing combs.

The Control Board runs the microcontroller, the power button and an LCD that shows charge and battery state. Power comes from the Battery Pack, a single 18650 Li-ion cell with a protection board and charge-management IC. The Charging Stand docks the clipper on pogo contacts and feeds 5 V from a USB-C cable.

The supplied guide combs clip over the blade to hold the hair a fixed distance from the teeth, and a drop of blade oil on the teeth keeps the moving blade running smoothly and reduces wear.
