Permanent Makeup Machine Product
Overview
A permanent makeup machine is a precision handheld applicator for depositing hypoallergenic pigment into the dermal layer of skin. Unlike traditional tattoo machines designed for deeper ink penetration, PMU machines operate at shallower depth (0.5–1.5 mm) with micro-gauge needles (25–30 gauge) to avoid scarring while achieving long-lasting color enhancement of eyebrows, lips, and eyeliner.
The system consists of a Rotary Handpiece driven by a brushless 12 V motor, connected via Hose Assembly to a Ink Reservoir and desktop Enclosure and Stand housing power and control electronics. A Magnification Lamp provides ×5–×10 magnification and high-CRI lighting for precise placement. The operator modulates needle frequency (50–150 Hz) via Foot Control footswitch, adjusting ink saturation and color intensity without changing needle depth.
Handpiece and needle drive
The Rotary Handpiece contains a brushless Motor Core spinning at 6000 RPM, coupled to an Eccentric Drive cam that converts rotational motion into linear needle reciprocation. The needle moves vertically within a precision Needle Guide Sleeve (6 mm ID aluminum tube with ±0.05 mm bore tolerance), constraining motion to a 3–4 mm stroke.
Each application uses a single-use sterile Needle Cartridge containing a Needle Micro-Gauge (25–30 gauge, 0.3–0.5 mm diameter) in a Cartridge Holder surgical steel housing. The needle is connected to a Pigment Feed Tube capillary that draws ink from the Ink Reservoir via gravity, depositing pigment at the needle tip during reciprocation.
Vibration isolation Motor Dampers elastomer mounts decouple the 50–150 Hz needle oscillation from the operator's hand, reducing fatigue during extended sessions (2–4 hours typical for eyebrow or lip work).
Ink supply and sterility
The Ink Reservoir is a sealed 5 mL polycarbonate bottle connected to the Hose Assembly silicone tubing via a Ink Tube Connector Luer-lock fitting. A One-Way Valve check valve prevents ink backflow into the reservoir.
An Air Vent Filter 0.2 µm hydrophobic membrane on the reservoir vent allows air replacement as ink depletes, while preventing airborne contamination or microbial ingress. Sterile PMU inks formulated for dermal implantation (iron oxides, titanium dioxide, or FDA-approved synthetic pigments) are supplied in pre-sterilized bottles. Reuse of the same cartridge between clients is never acceptable; cross-contamination risk is eliminated through single-use cartridge protocol.
Frequency control and magnification
The Speed Controller modulates motor frequency based on Foot Control analog pedal input, varying needle frequency from 50–150 Hz. Lower frequencies (50–70 Hz) deliver more pigment per stroke, suitable for bold eyebrow lines. Higher frequencies (120–150 Hz) produce lighter color saturation, used for soft shading and blending.
The Magnification Lamp LED ring light with variable ×5–×10 lens provides 2000 lux at 30 cm working distance and 5000 K color temperature for accurate color assessment. The articulated Lamp Arm gooseneck allows positioning the lamp off to the side, preventing shadows during application.
Desktop configuration
The Enclosure and Stand pedestal stand houses the AC mains inlet, internal Transformer (110–240 V AC to 12 V DC 2 A isolated supply), and Control PCB MCU controller. A Display LCD LCD panel shows real-time frequency (Hz) and operation mode (e.g., "PMU Mode", "Frequency 80 Hz").
The Foot Control pedal sits on the floor, connected via cable to the stand. This hands-free control allows the artist to adjust needle speed during application without interrupting handpiece positioning.
Permanent makeup workflow
Pre-application includes design (eyebrow shape, lip color mapping) via stencil or freehand outline on the client's skin. The artist loads a sterile Needle Cartridge and adjusts lamp position for visibility.
During application, the handpiece makes slow passes across the skin at 50–100 Hz frequency, depositing pigment in the dermal layer (approximately 1–1.5 mm depth). The shallow penetration creates a color layer that remains visible as the epidermis regenerates, but fades gradually (12–36 months depending on client skin turnover and UV exposure).
Post-application aftercare includes scabbing phase (7–10 days), during which pigment darkens then lightens as scabs shed. A touch-up session at 4–6 weeks ensures full pigment retention in any faded areas.
Advantages and limitations
PMU machines excel at precision eyebrow and lip work due to micro-gauge needles and variable frequency control. The handheld design allows fine artistic control of line weight and shading, and the shallow depth minimizes scarring and adverse tissue reaction compared to full-depth tattoo pigmentation.
Limitations include allergic reactions to PMU pigments (even hypoallergenic formulations), inability to apply true black pigment without risk of blue-shifting as iron oxide oxidizes over time, and gradual fading requiring 1–3 year touch-up cycles. Some skin types (very oily, very dry, reactive) respond unpredictably.
