Four-Post Storage Lift Product
Overview
The four-post storage lift is a permanent vertical storage system designed to double vehicle capacity in fixed garages, repair shops, and fleet facilities. Unlike mobile column lifts, a four-post lift is installed in place and uses cable-driven pulleys at each corner to raise a rigid platform to the ceiling, parking a second vehicle underneath. The system employs synchronized dual motors and mechanical safety locks that engage on ratchet teeth milled into the posts themselves, ensuring passive holding even during power loss.
Each lift is rated to hold 8,000 lbs total (2,000 lbs per corner). The steel frame consists of four welded box-section columns with cross-bracing, while the cable system routes through pulleys to distribute load evenly. A motorized winch on the frame pulls the cables; position feedback from an encoder feeds the control unit, which triggers mechanical locks at height.
Typical installation lifts vehicles 12 feet into ceiling-mounted storage, creating usable space below for a second car or equipment racks. The system is favored in compact shops where floor space is at a premium and vehicles remain in storage for extended periods. Four-post lifts cannot accommodate trucks or vehicles with roof racks, and require robust overhead structural support (minimum 2×12 ceiling joists every 16 inches).
How it works
When the operator presses the Up button on the control pendant, the contactor energizes both motors simultaneously. A rotary encoder on the winch shaft monitors lift height in real time and ensures both motors stay synchronized to within 1/4 inch, preventing binding. The 100:1 gearbox reduces motor speed to approximately 18 rpm at the drum, pulling the steel cable at 2 fpm.
As the platform rises, pulleys at each post redirect cable motion vertically. The system is rigged so that a single cable loop passes under and over stationary sheaves, meaning each foot of drum rotation lifts the platform 4 feet—a 4:1 mechanical advantage that reduces motor load. When the platform reaches the preset upper limit (detected by a mechanical limit switch on the drum), the controller de-energizes the motors and triggers four solenoid pulls that release mechanical pawls.
As the motors stop, the springs snap the pawls into engagement with the ratchet teeth on each post. This mechanical lock is entirely passive—it holds load through the shape of the teeth, not through electrical power. Even if main power is cut, the vehicle remains safely parked at height. Lowering requires the operator to press Down, which energizes the spring-set brake solenoid to release the holding friction, and allows gravity to lower the vehicle under winch control at the same 2 fpm rate.
A dual-motor synchronization loop in the controller compares encoder ticks from both sides and adjusts individual motor speed to keep the platform level. If one motor lags by more than 2 inches, the control unit alarms and stops motion to prevent platform tilt. Mechanical fasteners on the platform frame itself distribute the 8,000 lbs load equally across the four posts, which are braced by diagonal steel tubes welded to resist lateral sway.
Storage and maintenance
The caster wheels (two swivel, two fixed) allow the entire frame to be rolled into position before bolting it down. Floor mounting is through four 5/8" anchor bolts into concrete. A drip pan sits under the lower vehicle to catch any fluid leakage; an optional canvas canopy shields the stored car from dust and light.
Maintenance is minimal: cable tension is checked annually (should have 3/8" deflection under hand pressure midspan), the gearbox oil is topped up as needed, and pawl springs are inspected for corrosion. The brake is a passive device and requires no adjustment. Most systems operate trouble-free for 20+ years with basic upkeep.
Engineering standards
Four-post lifts in the United States must comply with ANSI/AAMVA (Association of Automotive Manufacturers) standards for personal-use automobile lifts (typically ALI AACD-1). Key safety requirements include redundant mechanical locks independent of power, a limit switch to cut power at the top, and manual descent capability in case of electrical failure (though this design uses the friction brake for that purpose). The control logic uses force-guided safety relays rated to IEC 61508 SIL 2 to ensure the motor cannot restart if a safety circuit opens during operation.
