Cordless Drill

Overview

A cordless drill/driver bores holes and drives fasteners using a reversible electric motor, a speed-reducing gearbox and a chuck that grips round-shank bits. This 18 V model uses a brushless motor for efficiency and runtime, a two-speed planetary gearbox for the trade-off between speed and torque, and an adjustable clutch that slips at a set torque so screws seat without stripping or over-driving.

The Battery Pack supplies an 18 V slide pack of lithium cells to the Motor Controller Board, a brushless control board that reads the Variable-Speed Trigger and the Forward/Reverse Switch to set speed and direction. The board commutates the Brushless Motor from Hall-sensor feedback. Motor output passes through the Planetary Gearbox, whose high/low ranges are selected by a slider that repositions a ring gear in the planetary stack.

Construction

The tool is built in a glass-filled nylon clamshell with an overmoulded grip. The motor mounts at the rear and feeds the planetary reduction; ahead of it sits the Clutch Assembly, an adjustable torque clutch where a collar varies the spring preload on balls that ride a ramped ring. Once driving torque overcomes that preload, the ring ratchets and the output stops turning.

At the front, the Keyless Chuck is a keyless three-jaw chuck: rotating the sleeve drives the jaws along a threaded body to grip bit shanks from a needle point up to 13 mm. A trigger-linked LED lights the work, a reversible belt clip hangs the tool, and a fuel-gauge board on the pack shows remaining charge. The brushless drivetrain, variable trigger and electronic clutch together give fine control from delicate driving to full-torque drilling.
