Electric Grease Gun Product
Overview
An electric grease gun is a portable pump dispenser that extrudes high-viscosity lubricating grease into bearing cavities, universal joints, and moving machinery joints. Unlike manual grease guns that require significant hand force and repeated strokes, electric grease guns use a motorized piston pump to generate consistent pressure (150+ bar) with minimal operator effort, reducing hand fatigue on maintenance routes.
This tool is essential in industrial maintenance, automotive service, agriculture equipment care, and heavy construction where dozens or hundreds of grease points require regular lubrication. The electric variant enables technicians to service equipment 3–5 times faster than manual pumping.
How it Works
The Lithium-Ion Battery Pack (20V lithium-ion) powers the Brushless Pump Drive Motor, a brushless motor geared to deliver low-speed, high-torque drive to the pump. The Piston Displacement Pump is a piston displacement pump: as the motor drives the eccentric shaft, the Pump Piston Rod reciprocates in the Pump Cylinder Block.
On the intake stroke, the piston retracts, opening an inlet port and drawing grease from the cartridge. On the discharge stroke, the piston advances, closing the inlet and pressurizing grease into the discharge manifold. The pressurized grease flows through the Delivery Hose Tube to the field coupler.
The Pressure Gauge Assembly tees off the discharge line, providing real-time pressure feedback to the operator. If pressure exceeds a set threshold (typically 150–200 bar), the Pressure Relief Valve relief valve opens, returning excess flow back to the cartridge reservoir to prevent hose bursts or seal failure.
The Proportional Dispensing Trigger is a proportional switch that modulates motor speed, allowing fine control of extrusion rate. Half-trigger delivers slower pump strokes; full trigger drives the pump at maximum displacement.
Cartridge and Reservoir Design
The Grease Cartridge and Reservoir is a cylindrical 400–500 mL plastic or aluminum container pre-filled with NLGI #2 lithium grease or other formulations. The Cartridge Barrel slides into a retention mount on the tool body. The Cartridge Internal Piston is a floating seal that separates the grease column from the pump intake port.
As grease is pumped out, the cartridge piston advances, maintaining positive pressure on the remaining grease and preventing air ingestion into the pump. This design enables complete cartridge emptying with no air entrapment.
When the cartridge empties, the operator unscrews the cartridge base, slides out the spent cartridge, inserts a fresh one, and threads the base hand-tight. Total cartridge change time is typically 30 seconds.
Hose and Quick-Disconnect Coupling
The electric-grease-gun-hose-assembly consists of a high-pressure hose rated for 150+ bar with a quick-disconnect male coupler on the tip. Industry-standard grease points are fitted with female Zerk fittings; the male coupler from the gun snaps into the Zerk, and the operator triggers the gun to extrude grease until slight back-pressure is felt.
Hose lengths vary from 6 to 15 meters depending on application. A 15-meter hose allows centralizing the gun supply point while technicians service equipment throughout a facility.
Pressure Management
The Pressure Relief Valve is a spring-loaded relief valve that opens when system pressure reaches the preset threshold (typically 150 bar for standard applications, 200 bar for high-speed spindle bearings). This protects both the pump and the field coupler from catastrophic overpressure.
Some grease points have restricted intake capacity; attempting to force excessive grease causes pressure spikes. The relief valve opens smoothly, preventing damage and allowing the operator to feel backpressure and cease extrusion.
Thermal Management and Battery Life
The pump generates heat during continuous operation, particularly on high-pressure applications. The motor thermal rating allows sustained duty up to 45°C ambient. For extended maintenance routes in hot environments, operators often use two battery packs, charging one while the tool runs on the other.
Typical runtime is 40–60 standard grease cartridges per 2.0 Ah battery charge, equivalent to lubricating 200–300 grease points depending on demand per point.
Pressure Gauge and Diagnostics
The Pressure Gauge Assembly is typically an analog Bourdon tube dial calibrated 0–300 bar. Experienced technicians read the gauge to verify grease delivery and detect blockages. A grease point that normally reaches 80 bar at trigger suddenly spiking to 180 bar indicates a partially blocked fitting requiring cleaning or replacement.
Maintenance Considerations
The Pump Piston Rod and Pump Cylinder Block wear over time as they pump thousands of cartridges. Grease abrasive particles and water contamination accelerate wear. Periodic flush-and-fill routines (running the pump with clean grease and discarding the output) extend seal life.
Hose inspection before each use is recommended; high-pressure hose should be retired if external cuts or abrasion is visible, as internal failure can cause sudden loss of pressure.
Pressure Settings and Grease Formulation
Standard lithium grease (NLGI #2, 150 bar relief) covers most bearings. Extreme-pressure (EP) formulations with graphite or molybdenum disulfide suit heavily loaded gears and cam followers. Low-temperature formulations suit arctic equipment. The motor and pump are indifferent to formulation; pressure relief settings remain the same.
Safety and Ergonomics
The proportional Proportional Dispensing Trigger allows precise control, reducing wrist and hand strain compared to manual manual pumps. The Trigger Safety Guard prevents accidental discharge.
Never point a pressurized grease gun at skin or eyes; high-pressure grease injection can penetrate skin and cause serious infection if not surgically cleaned. All users must understand pressure hazards and wear appropriate personal protective equipment.
Industrial Applications
Bearing Maintenance: Angular contact bearings in spindle bearings, reducers, and wheel hubs require grease every 40–200 operating hours depending on speed and load.
Automotive Service: Steering tie-rod ends, CV joints, suspension ball joints, and differential carriers need periodic re-greasing in high-mileage service.
Agricultural Equipment: Combine harvesters, grain augers, and planting machinery have 50–100+ grease points requiring servicing every 200 operating hours.
Heavy Machinery: Mining, construction, and forestry equipment with hundreds of bearing points benefit significantly from electric grease gun speed compared to manual methods.
