Drywall Sander (giraffe) Product

Overview

A drywall sander, nicknamed a giraffe for its long neck, smooths plaster and joint compound on walls and ceilings from the floor without scaffolding or stilts. A round powered head on the end of a telescoping pole reaches high and flat against the surface, and a brush shroud plus a vacuum connection capture most of the fine gypsum dust that would otherwise fill the room. Variable speed lets the operator match the abrasive grade and avoid gouging soft compound.

The tool is driven by the Drive Motor in the body, whose torque travels up the Telescoping Pole through a flexible shaft to the Sanding Head. The head carries a hook-and-loop Backing Pad and a perforated Sanding Disc, surrounded by a Brush Shroud that seals it to the wall. A Pivot Joint lets the head float flat at any pole angle. The operator works from the Handle & Controls, setting speed on the On/Off & Speed Dial.

How it works

Because the motor sits in the body for balance but the abrasive must spin at the head, torque is carried by the Flexible Drive Shaft, a sheathed flexible shaft routed through the Pole Tube. The pole telescopes and locks at the Length Clamp to set reach. Speed from the Speed Control Board board is held across the range so coarse stripping and fine finishing both run at the right surface speed.

Dust control is central to the design. The perforated disc and the ventilated pad let dust pass straight through the head into the Dust Extraction path: the Brush Shroud contains it, the Dust Port couples to a Vacuum Hose, and on many models a Blower Motor adds suction so the head pulls dust even when the shroud lifts off the wall. The articulating Pivot Joint keeps the abrasive flat through that whole process, which is what prevents the swirl marks and dished patches that ruin a finish coat. The two-hand Grip Body and the floor-standing motor body keep the long tool manageable overhead, while the Power Cord supplies mains power.
