Touring Bicycle

Product

Overview

A touring bicycle is built to carry a rider and 15 to 25 kg of luggage over long distances, day after day, often on rough or remote roads. Its priorities are durability, comfort, stable loaded handling, and field repairability, which set it apart from a lightweight road racer. The defining traits are a steel frame with mounts for racks, fenders, and water bottles, a wide-range drivetrain for climbing fully loaded, strong 36-spoke wheels, and parts that can be serviced with simple tools far from a bike shop.

The bike is organised around the frameset, which carries the front wheel and rear wheel. The drivetrain converts pedalling into forward motion across a broad gear range, the brakeset provides controlled stopping, and the cockpit gives the rider several hand positions over long hours. The leather saddle supports the rider, the load system holds the luggage and keeps off road spray, and the lighting system runs from a generator in the front hub.

Frame and geometry

The frame is made from 4130 chromoly steel, a chromium-molybdenum alloy chosen because it is strong, repairable by brazing or welding almost anywhere in the world, and flexes enough to take the sting out of rough surfaces. The main triangle uses a top tube, a larger-diameter down tube that carries the highest loads, and a seat tube bored to 27.2 mm for the post. The head tube holds the steering bearings.

Touring geometry is relaxed: head and seat angles near 72 degrees, a longer wheelbase, and long 445 mm chainstays that give heel clearance for rear panniers and damp the bike's reaction to a heavy load. The seatstays complete the rear triangle and the forged dropouts carry a derailleur hanger and rack eyelets. The steel fork has roughly 50 mm of rake and low-rider mounts partway down each blade, so front panniers sit low and central. The fork steers in the head tube on a sealed headset running two cartridge bearings. Power reaches the cranks through a sealed bottom bracket threaded into the shell. A set of braze-ons adds rack, fender, and three bottle-cage mounts directly to the steel.

Drivetrain

The transmission is a 3x9 system with very low gears for hauling weight uphill. The triple crankset carries a 48-tooth outer ring, a 36-tooth middle ring, and a 26-tooth inner ring on 170 mm crank arms. Combined with an 11-34 tooth cassette, this spans roughly 20 to 110 gear inches, low enough to spin up a steep grade with full panniers and high enough to keep pace on a descent.

Gears are changed with bar-end shifters mounted in the ends of the drop bar. These switch between indexed and friction modes, so if a cable stretches or a derailleur is knocked out of adjustment, the rider can shift by feel and keep moving. The front derailleur lifts the chain between the three rings, and the long-cage rear derailleur guides it across the wide cassette while its sprung cage and two jockey wheels take up the slack. The pedals are dual-sided, with a flat platform for casual shoes and a clipless retention mechanism for efficient pedalling.

Wheels and tyres

Touring wheels trade light weight for strength. Each is laced with 36 14-gauge stainless spokes in a three-cross pattern, tensioned with brass nipples, onto a stiff double-wall rim. The high spoke count spreads load and keeps the wheel true even if one spoke breaks. The rear wheel uses a cassette hub whose freehub ratchets the cassette and lets the rider coast. The front wheel is built on a hub dynamo, a small generator inside the hub that powers the lights. Both wheels run 700C x 37 mm touring tyres with a puncture-resistant belt and reflective sidewall, mounted over rim tape and butyl inner tubes.

Braking

Most steel tourers use cable-actuated cantilever brakes, one at each wheel. The wide-set arms pivot on frame bosses and leave room for fat tyres and fenders, and a straddle cable pulls the two arms together so the pads grip the rim. They are simple to adjust by the roadside and the cartridge pads are cheap to replace. The rider works each brake through a drop-bar lever and a stainless cable. Many newer tourers fit disc brakes instead for stronger, weather-stable stopping when heavily loaded, but cantilevers remain common where simplicity matters most.

Load carrying and accessories

The load system is what makes the bike self-supported. A welded rear rack rated to about 25 kg bolts to the seatstay and dropout eyelets, and a front low-rider rack hangs panniers low beside the front wheel to keep the steering calm. Full fenders on stainless stays block road spray, and a rear kickstand holds the loaded bike upright at rest stops. The cockpit adds three bottle cages and cushioned bar tape, while the leather saddle tensions a thick hide top over steel rails and breaks in to the rider over hundreds of miles.

Lighting and materials

The lighting system runs entirely off the hub dynamo, which produces about 3 W at 6 V from wheel rotation with very little drag. Wiring carries that output to a front lamp with a cut-off LED beam and a rear lamp, both fitted with a standlight capacitor that keeps them lit for a minute or so after the bike stops. Materials are chosen for service life: chromoly steel for the frame and fork, aluminium alloy for rims, cranks, and stems, stainless steel for spokes and cables that resist road salt, brass for spoke nipples, and copper rivets on the saddle. Variants range from drop-bar expedition bikes with disc brakes and 26-inch wheels for remote travel, to lighter credit-card tourers with a single rear rack, to flat-bar trekking bikes set up for paved touring and commuting.
