Dental Ultrasonic Scaler Product
Overview
An ultrasonic scaler removes calculus, plaque and stain from teeth by vibrating a slender steel tip tens of thousands of times a second while a film of water keeps the tip cool and washes the field clear. It does in minutes, and far more comfortably, what hand instruments do by scraping. The piezoelectric type built here is the quieter, mostly-linear-stroke alternative to magnetostrictive scalers, and it is the dominant design in modern dental and veterinary practice.
The clinician holds the Piezo Transducer Handpiece, a pen-grip barrel containing a pre-stressed stack of Piezoelectric Element ceramics bonded to an Acoustic Horn. An exchangeable Scaling Tip threads onto the horn and is seated with the Tip Torque Wrench so the assembly resonates in band. Inside the console, the Ultrasonic Generator Board synthesises the drive signal and the High-Voltage Power Driver steps it up to the high voltage the ceramics demand. The Irrigation System system meters cooling water to the tip, the Foot Pedal starts and stops the action hands-free, and the Control Panel sets amplitude and flow.
Because the work is done acoustically rather than by force, the operator can use a light grip and let the vibrating tip, not pressure, fracture the calculus off the enamel.
How it works
When the pedal closes, the Ultrasonic Generator Board drives the High-Voltage Power Driver, whose Drive Transformer raises the half-bridge output to hundreds of volts across the piezo stack. The ceramics expand and contract with that field, and the Acoustic Horn amplifies their tiny displacement into a usable stroke at the Scaling Tip. Tooth structure, calculus density and grip pressure all shift the mechanical resonance, so the Resonance Feedback Network network feeds tip current and phase back to the controller, which nudges the drive frequency to stay locked on resonance and hold the amplitude the Control Panel requested.
At the same instant the controller energises the Relay in the Irrigation System block, opening the Solenoid Water Valve. Water set by the Flow Regulator Knob runs through the Irrigation Tubing Set and out a lumen alongside the tip. That water cools the friction-heated tip, and the collapsing micro-bubbles it sheds add a scrubbing, cavitational effect that lifts debris from below the gumline. Clean water can come from the mains or from a pressurised bottle on the Water Bottle Mount.
Drive power and water both reach the handpiece through the Handpiece Cable Set, whose quick-connect Connector lets the whole handpiece come off for autoclaving. The Console Housing keeps the boards, valve and panel in a wipe-clean shell, and the touch overlay on the Control Panel reports the active mode and power level back to the clinician.
