Dental Amalgamator Product

Overview

A dental amalgamator, or triturator, mixes the materials a dentist uses to fill teeth. Both halves of a dental amalgam, a powdered silver alloy and liquid mercury, arrive sealed in a single-use capsule; the machine shakes that capsule violently for a few seconds so the two phases combine into a smooth, plastic mass the dentist can pack before it sets. The same machine mixes glass-ionomer and other encapsulated cements. The mixing is purely mechanical, so the design is built around throwing a small mass through a fast, balanced oscillation.

The clinician drops the capsule into the Oscillating Arm & Capsule Clamp, whose Capsule Clamp grips it, then closes the Lid & Safety Interlock and starts the timer on the Control Board & Timer. A motor in the arm spins a Eccentric Crank through the Drive Train belt, throwing the clamp through a high-speed figure-of-eight. A Counterweight and the Cabinet Housing keep the machine planted while it runs, and the Anti-Vibration Foot stop the vibration reaching the bench.

The whole cycle is over in seconds, which matters because amalgam begins to set the moment mixing stops, so the dentist works against a clock that the timer starts.

How it works

When the Lid & Safety Interlock is closed, its Lid Switch satisfies the interlock and the Control Board & Timer arms. Pressing start, the Microcontroller commands the Motor Driver Stage to ramp the motor, whose Stator Assembly and Rotor Assembly spin inside the Motor Housing. The Drive Belt couples the motor to the arm through the Drive Pulley set, with the Belt Tensioner holding the ratio steady. On the shaft, the Eccentric Crank turns that rotation into the rapid back-and-forth throw that triturates the capsule contents.

Throwing a mass thousands of times a minute would shake the machine apart, so the Counterweight swings opposite the arm to cancel most of the reaction force, and the Ball Bearing pair carries the arm pivot. Whatever vibration is left is absorbed by the Base Plate and the rubber Anti-Vibration Foot rather than passed to the bench.

Mercury vapour is the hazard here, so the Lid Cover and its Lid Seal contain the capsule and any vapour, and the Relay in the interlock cuts power the instant the Lid Switch reports the lid open. When the timer set on the LCD Panel and Touch Digitizer expires, the Motor Driver Stage brakes the motor quickly so the dentist gets a defined, repeatable mix every time.
