Panoramic Dental X-Ray Product
Overview
A panoramic dental X-ray machine — the orthopantomograph — produces a single curved-plane radiograph showing both jaws, every tooth, the maxillary sinuses, and both temporomandibular joints in one 10–18 second sweep. Instead of holding film inside the mouth, the machine rotates an X-ray X-Ray Tube Head and an opposing Digital Detector around the patient's head on a motorized Rotating C-Arm, building the image column by column as the beam sweeps along the dental arch. Dentists use it for treatment planning, wisdom-tooth assessment, implant surveys, and trauma screening, at an effective patient dose of roughly 8–25 µSv — comparable to a few days of natural background.
Imaging geometry
Panoramic imaging is a form of narrow-beam tomography. The Slit Collimator reduces the beam to a vertical fan only a few millimeters wide, aimed through the patient at the slit-shaped detector. As the C-Arm Casting sweeps through roughly 270°, structures lying in a horseshoe-shaped focal trough stay in sharp focus while everything in front of or behind the trough blurs away.
A single fixed rotation center cannot trace a parabolic human arch, so the X-Y Translation Stage continuously translates the instantaneous rotation center during the sweep: the effective center slides along the lingual side of the arch, keeping the beam locally perpendicular to the teeth. Microstepped Hybrid Stepper Motor motors with Encoder feedback on each axis execute the motion profile, and a Slip Ring Assembly carries power and detector data across the rotating joint. Modern units store profiles for adult, pediatric, and edentulous arch shapes, plus segmented programs (TMJ views, sinus views, bitewing-style segments) that expose only part of the sweep.
X-ray generation
The X-Ray Tube is a stationary-anode design: a heated tungsten filament emits electrons that the tube potential accelerates into a tungsten target inclined at about 5°, giving an effective focal spot near 0.5 mm. Less than 1% of the electron energy becomes X-rays; the rest heats the anode, which is why the tube sits in the oil-filled, lead-lined Tube Housing.
The High-Voltage Generator is a high-frequency type. An IGBT Power Module inverter chops the rectified mains at 40–150 kHz, the HV Step-Up Transformer steps it up, and the HV Rectifier/Multiplier multiplier delivers a constant 60–90 kV with under 4% ripple — a near-DC potential that yields a harder, more dose-efficient spectrum than older 50/60 Hz generators. The Aluminum Beam Filter then strips photons below about 30 keV that would deposit dose in the cheek without ever reaching the detector.
Detection and readout
Behind the patient, the beam strikes the CsI:Tl Scintillator, a columnar CsI:Tl layer whose needle structure guides scintillation light to the CMOS Image Sensor beneath with little lateral spread. The sensor is a CMOS line array operated in time-delay-integration: charge is shifted down the columns at exactly the rate the projected image moves across the slit, so each anatomical point integrates signal over many lines. The Detector Readout Board clocks out 100–300 lines per second at 48–100 µm pixel pitch, and the Console Computer Board assembles the columns into a finished radiograph roughly 2,800 × 1,500 pixels, applying flat-field and contrast corrections before export over the Network Interface as a DICOM study.
Patient positioning
Image quality lives or dies on positioning, because the focal trough is only 10–20 mm thick at the anterior teeth. The patient bites the grooved Bite Block to set anteroposterior depth, rests on the Chin Rest, and is steadied by the Temple Clamp while gripping the Patient Handgrips. Three Positioning Laser lines — midsagittal, Frankfort horizontal, and canine — let the operator verify alignment before the sweep. A patient positioned a few millimeters too far forward shows narrowed, blurred anterior teeth; too far back, magnified ones.
The whole imaging assembly rides the Lift Carriage on a telescopic Telescopic Column, raised and lowered through 60–80 cm by the Column Lift Drive so standing, seated, and wheelchair patients can all be imaged.
Exposure control
Radiation safety hardware is regulatory, not optional. The operator initiates exposure from behind shielding with the Deadman Exposure Button; releasing it at any moment kills tube current and stops the arm. A Radiation Warning Light and console tone run for the duration, and the HV supply is gated through interlocked Relay contactors in the Power Distribution. Automatic exposure control on current models samples detector signal early in the sweep and trims mA on the fly, holding image density constant across patient sizes while minimizing dose.
