Wide-Body Airliner Product

Overview

A wide-body airliner is the largest mass-produced machine humans build. Airbus quotes about four million individual parts in an A380, manufactured by roughly 1,500 companies in 30 countries; Boeing's 747 carried a similar six-million-part legend for half a century. Most of those parts are not exotic — they are rivets, lockbolts, clips and brackets, repeated hundreds of thousands of times across the Fuselage Sections and Wings that carry everything else.

The airframe divides into five large Fuselage Sections joined at circumferential splices, two Wings built around three-spar boxes, and a composite Empennage. Each fuselage section alone carries hundreds of frames and stringers and over 400,000 Rivet / Lockbolts; each wing adds another 660,000 fasteners through its Wing Spars, Wing Ribs and machined Wing Skin Panels.

Propulsion

Thrust comes from up to four Large Turbofan Engines, each a roughly 25,000-part machine in its own right. Air enters through the Fan Module — two dozen Fan Blades on a single Fan Disc inside a containment Fan Containment Case — then passes the fourteen stages of the Compressor Module, burns in the Combustor's Fuel Nozzle spray, and expands through the Turbine Module, whose Turbine Blade Rows run single-crystal Turbine Blades cooled below the gas temperature around them. The Engine Hardware Set set — seals, vanes, tubes and 22,000 fasteners — is what takes each engine to its documented part count.

Systems

The Electrical & Wiring System is the clearest window into the scale: about 530 kilometres of cable in ~100,000 individual Wire Run runs, terminated by ~40,300 Connectors — figures Airbus publishes for the A380. Four engine-driven Engine Generators feed twelve Power Distribution Panels. Flight control runs through the Hydraulic System's dual 5,000 psi circuits — eight Hydraulic Pumps, forty Flight Control Actuators and over a thousand titanium Hydraulic Line Segment segments — while the Fuel System manages up to 320,000 litres across its tanks with twenty-one Fuel Pumps and a hundred gauging Fuel Quantity Probes.

The Avionics Suite concentrates computing into IMA Cabinets — integrated modular avionics racks that replaced dozens of federated boxes — driving ten Flight Displays and triple-redundant ADIRS Unit and Flight Guidance Computer channels.

Cabin

The Cabin Interior is a building interior flying at Mach 0.85: up to 550 Passenger Seats (each itself ~150 parts of frame, cushions and recline mechanisms), eight Galley Monuments, fourteen Lavatory Module modules, 120 Overhead Bins and some 900 Cabin Lining Panels, plus a seat-back IFE Display for every passenger.

Landing gear

The Landing Gear Set set puts up to 22 wheels on the ground: a steerable Nose Gear and four Main Gear Bogies whose Carbon Brake Packs absorb the energy of 400 tonnes arriving at 250 km/h.
