Rowing Machine

Overview

A rowing machine reproduces the motion of sculling a boat, working the legs, back, and arms in one continuous full-body stroke. This is an air rower: the user pulls a handle that spins a fan flywheel, and the wind resistance of the fan provides the load. Air resistance is self-scaling, pull harder and the fan pushes back harder, so the machine suits both casual users and competitive training, with a damper to adjust feel.

The rower runs on a Frame whose front leg carries the Air Resistance Unit, joined to a rear leg by the Monorail Track Beam track beam. The user sits on the Seat Assembly carriage, braces against the Foot Stretcher, and pulls the Drive Mechanism handle. A Performance Monitor reports pace and stroke data.

How it works

The drive stroke is the engine of the machine. Pulling the Drive Mechanism handle unspools a nylon strap that turns a sprocket on the Air Resistance Unit flywheel, spinning the fan against the air. When the stroke ends, the recoil mechanism, a one-way clutch over a coil-spring spool, rewinds the strap while the flywheel free-spins, so the user can recover without back-driving the fan.

Felt resistance is set two ways. The flywheel fan blades move a fixed volume of air, but a sliding damper on the Air Resistance Unit housing opens or closes the intake vents, changing how much air reaches the blades and thus how quickly the flywheel decelerates between strokes. The Performance Monitor reads flywheel RPM through a Hall sensor and a magnet, deriving the boat's virtual speed, distance, and split. The Seat Assembly glides the aluminium rail on four bearing wheels so the legs can drive freely.
