Stair Climber

Overview

A stair climber, or stepmill, is a commercial cardio machine that presents an endless revolving staircase. Unlike a stepper that pumps two independent pedals, the stepmill drives a continuous loop of real steps under a motor, so the user climbs at a set cadence and the workout closely mimics ascending a tall building. The format delivers high caloric burn and loads the glutes and calves heavily.

The machine stands on a welded Steel Frame with a tall mast. The Revolving Staircase is the revolving step loop, turned by the Drive System motor and gearbox and loaded by the Eddy-Current Brake. A Motor Controller regulates step speed, Handrail Set grips support the user, and a Console runs programs and reads cadence.

How it works

The Revolving Staircase is a chain-driven loop: fourteen cast tread modules ride two roller chains over top and bottom shafts on ball bearings, so a new step continuously appears under the climber's foot. The Drive System turns this loop through an AC induction motor and a reduction gearbox, with a flywheel smoothing the step cadence.

Speed is set by the Motor Controller, a variable-frequency drive that switches the motor through an IGBT and MOSFET output stage to hold the commanded step rate against the user's weight. Training resistance is added by the Eddy-Current Brake, an eddy-current unit whose magnets drag on a conductive rotor; on many stepmills this also harvests energy back to the line. The Console reads a Hall cadence pickup, drives a touchscreen, and ties into the emergency-stop circuit so the steps halt instantly when triggered.
