Mars Science Rover Product

Overview

The Mars science rover is a self-contained robotic laboratory the size of a small car. It drives itself across rocky, sandy terrain, studies the rocks it finds, drills into the most interesting ones, and runs the powder through onboard instruments to read the chemistry. Because sunlight on Mars is weak and dust storms can block it for weeks, the rover does not rely on solar panels: its Power Subsystem subsystem is built around a radioisotope generator that produces steady electricity day and night from the heat of decaying plutonium.

Everything sensitive lives inside the Chassis / Warm Electronics Box, a sealed titanium box that keeps the electronics warm and clean. The rover rolls on the Mobility System system, a six-wheeled rocker-bogie suspension that climbs over rocks taller than the wheels without tipping. A Remote Sensing Mast stands above the deck carrying the cameras that pick driving routes and science targets, while the Robotic Arm reaches out to place a drill and contact instruments directly against the surface.

How it works

The brain is the Avionics package: a radiation-hardened flight computer that survives the harsh space environment and runs the autonomy that lets the rover plan its own short drives between commands from Earth. It reads attitude from an inertial unit, plans a path from stereo camera imagery, and sends torque commands to each of the six Wheel Drive Unit units. Steering the four corner wheels lets the rover arc, crab, or spin in place; the Differential Bar bar averages the two rockers so the body stays nearly level over rough ground.

When the rover reaches a science target, the arm places the Rotary-Percussive Drill against rock and grinds out a powdered core, then the turret rotates contact instruments into position. The powder feeds the Science Payload payload, where spectrometers identify minerals and an analyzer heats the sample to sniff for organic molecules; the best cores are sealed into tubes by the caching system for a possible future return to Earth.

Data flows home through the Telecom Subsystem subsystem, which hands large files to passing orbiters over UHF and sends commands and urgent telemetry directly to Earth over a steerable X-band dish. Through the long, frigid Martian nights the Thermal Control system keeps everything alive, blending passive radioisotope heater units, electric survival heaters, and a pumped fluid loop that carries waste heat from the generator to where the electronics need it.
