Docking Station

Product

Overview

A docking station expands a laptop's single Thunderbolt or USB4 port into a full desktop's worth of connectivity. One cable carries data, video, and charging power; the dock fans that link out to displays, storage, wired networking, card media, and audio, letting a portable machine drive a fixed workstation the instant it is plugged in.

The unit is built into an Enclosure Assembly of anodized aluminium that doubles as a heat spreader. The Main Board carries the controller silicon, and all jacks live in the Port Cluster. Heat from the high-speed controllers is managed by the Thermal & Shielding heatsink and shield assembly, while the DC Power Jack feeds the external adapter's output and the captive Host Cable links to the host.

How it works

The host link enters the Thunderbolt/USB Controller IC, which separates the multiplexed protocols on the single USB-C connection. Downstream USB traffic passes to the USB Hub IC, which fans it out to the USB-A ports. DisplayPort streams carried in alternate mode are routed by the DisplayPort/HDMI MUX retimer to the HDMI and DisplayPort outputs, supporting dual 4K at 60 Hz.

Wired networking runs through the Ethernet PHY, whose signals pass through isolation magnetics to the RJ45 jack. The PD Controller negotiates a Power Delivery contract with the host, routing the adapter's output back up the host cable to charge the laptop at up to 96 W while the rest of the dock draws its own rails. A configuration EEPROM stores the firmware descriptors the host enumerates against.
