External GPU Enclosure Product

Overview

An external GPU (eGPU) enclosure lets users add a high-performance discrete graphics card to a laptop or small form-factor PC via a Thunderbolt 3 port. The enclosure houses the GPU card, supplies high-current power (up to 450 W for top-tier cards), and provides high-speed PCIe connectivity through the Thunderbolt 3 Controller.

The Aluminum Enclosure is a compact aluminum box with top and side ventilation. The discrete GPU card (user-supplied) slides into the PCIe Slot Bridge inside. The Internal Power Supply inside the enclosure provides 8-pin and 6-pin PCIe connectors to the GPU, so the GPU draws its power from the enclosure's wall outlet rather than the laptop. The Thunderbolt 3 Cable carries both data (PCIe 3.0×16 traffic) and power (for enclosure operation) between the host computer and the dock.

The Cooling Fan Module work in tandem: the Intake Fan pulls cool air in, and the Exhaust Fan expels hot air, maintaining thermal headroom so the GPU can run at boost clocks.

How it works

The host computer (e.g., a MacBook or Windows laptop) initiates a Thunderbolt connection by sending a control packet to the TB3 Retimer IC. The controller verifies security (ICBM/security key validation) and establishes a PCIe link. The PCIe Switch IC then exposes the PCIe x16 Slot to the host as if it were a standard PCIe slot on the motherboard.

The GPU driver on the host operating system scans the PCIe bus and discovers the eGPU card. The driver loads, and the GPU is ready to accept graphics workloads. From the OS perspective, it's indistinguishable from an internal GPU — the only difference is latency: data travels over the TB3 cable at ~5 GB/s (TB3 gen 1) rather than the ~16 GB/s of an internal x16 slot, but the latency impact is negligible for most graphics applications (<5% performance loss).

When the GPU needs power, it pulls from the PSU Module, which is mains-powered. The PSU's Power Inductors and capacitor banks filter the voltage, delivering clean rails to the GPU's power delivery network. The Fan PWM Controller monitors the GPU die temperature (via SMBus on the card) and adjusts fan speed via PWM to maintain thermal targets.

The Thermal Interface Pads and Heatsink Mounting Bracket ensure the GPU's existing heatsink is well-thermally interfaced to the enclosure's aluminum chassis, which acts as a secondary heat dissipator.
