Overview

A tape library is a robot that stores data on magnetic tape and fetches it on demand. Tape is slow to reach but cheap, dense, and durable for decades, so it remains the medium of choice for backups and cold archives. The library's job is to remove the human from the loop: instead of someone hunting for a cartridge and feeding a drive, a small robot finds the right tape, loads it, and files it away again.

The unit is built around a Enclosure & Frame holding rows of Storage Magazine cassettes, each a column of cartridge slots. One or more LTO Tape Drive units read and write the tape, and a Robotic Picker (Accessor) shuttles cartridges between slots and drives. A Barcode Scanner rides on the picker to keep an accurate inventory, a Library Controller runs the whole show, and a Operator Control Panel lets an operator drive it by hand.

How it works

When a host asks for a tape, the controller looks up its slot in the inventory and commands the accessor to move. The X-Axis Drive carries it along the slot columns while the Y-Axis Lift lifts it to the right row; both close the loop with encoders so the gripper arrives precisely. The Cartridge Gripper reaches into the slot, latches the cartridge by its picking notch, and pulls it onto the accessor.

The robot then delivers the cartridge to a drive, where the Threading Mechanism catches the leader pin and threads the tape across the Read/Write Head onto the take-up reel. Two reel motors spin in opposition to hold constant tension as data streams past the head. After the job, the accessor returns the cartridge to its slot, reading its label with the scanner on the way to confirm the inventory. New cartridges enter through the Import/Export Mailslot without halting the robot, so the archive grows while it keeps running.
