USB Webcam

Overview

A USB webcam is a self-contained camera that streams video to a computer over a single cable. It pairs a CMOS sensor and autofocus lens with an image processor that compresses the feed into a standard USB video stream, so it works on any operating system without drivers. Dual microphones capture stereo audio and a sliding shutter covers the lens when the camera is idle.

The camera is built into a two-piece Housing with a privacy shutter. The Camera Module captures the image, the Mainboard processes and packetizes it, and a MEMS Microphone Unit picks up sound. A Ring Light LED Board adds fill illumination, the captive USB Cable connects to the host, and the Mounting Clip / Foldable Stand clamps the camera to a monitor or screws onto a tripod.

How it works

Light enters the Lens Assembly, passes through an IR-cut filter that blocks infrared for accurate color, and falls on the CMOS image sensor, which converts the focused image into a digital pixel stream. The Autofocus VCM Actuator voice-coil motor shifts the lens to keep the subject sharp, driving autofocus as the subject moves.

The raw sensor data flows to the ISP / USB Video Controller IC, an image signal processor that performs white balance, exposure, and noise reduction, then encodes the result and presents it to the host as a UVC-class USB device. The MEMS Microphone elements digitize audio that the controller multiplexes into the same stream. A configuration EEPROM stores calibration and descriptors, an EMI Shield can over the mainboard suppresses radio interference, and the front Status LED lights whenever the host opens the camera.
