Graphics Drawing Tablet

Overview

A graphics drawing tablet of the pen-display type is a screen you draw directly on. It pairs a color LCD with an electromagnetic digitizer so a stylus tracks position, pressure, and tilt over the live image, giving illustrators and retouchers the feel of drawing on paper while the strokes land exactly where the nib touches.

The unit is built into a Housing Assembly with fold-out legs. Above the screen sits the laminated Display Module; behind it the EMR Digitizer Board senses the pen. The Main Board scales the incoming video, the Express Keys & Touch Ring cluster supplies shortcut input, and the battery-free EMR Stylus is the drawing instrument. An Anti-Glare Film over the glass cuts reflections.

How it works

The EMR digitizer is a grid of antenna coils behind the LCD. The Digitizer Antenna Coil energizes the EMR Sensor Grid with an oscillating field; the pen contains a passive resonant LC circuit that absorbs this energy and re-emits it. By scanning which grid lines pick up the strongest return, the controller locates the nib to sub-millimetre precision and reads tilt from the field pattern. No battery is needed in the pen because the grid powers it.

Nib pressure shifts the pen's resonant frequency, which the controller decodes into 8,192 pressure levels for line-weight control. Meanwhile video arrives over USB-C or HDMI to the mainboard, where the SoC scales it to the panel and the Display Driver Board times it onto the IPS pixels. The Optical Bonding Adhesive optically bonds the cover glass to the panel, removing the air gap so the cursor sits directly under the nib with no parallax.
